Compare these two and look closely at the distance between the base and cottle, and the cottle to tip - I still stick by my 34ish guess - you've got a couple inches more in the 38 base to cottle, and not much if any more cottle to tip.

Same story with this one - he's a touch shorter cottle to tip, and touch longer base to cottle. He also picks up a bit with the little 'bounce' out at the cottle.

You'd be surprised how much they can pick up by the back sweep too - can't tell how much this buck has by the picture.

My typical field scoring is take what my gut first says, and subtract 2" - First looking at the photo I thought 36"

Taxi, wasn't arguing with you, just trying to show how I field score axis. Most look a touch bigger than they are, but the biggest IMO are typically surprises - may not be that wide, or look that much different from the front. I saw a 42" at woodburys a long time ago that (while he looked awesome) didn't look all that much more impressive than a 35x35 curved horn - he just rocked way back & bounced way out at the cottle.
