You better check that. Leash laws apply to any uncontained pet.

if the animal is not contained it must be on a leash.

I've caught six cats inside my six foot fence. Does this mean these were my cats? A fence means nothing to a cat. I've had cat fights break out in my back yard. My lab wants nothing to with those cats. It got so bad I had let him out in the front because of the cats. I kept animal control busy for a week with cats and one possum.

Pets must be contained or on a leash.

That falls under the heading........ tough call. Maybe if you had been outside at the time, the out come would have been different.

Not sure what I would have done, probably not shot it if the owner were there trying to prevent it as it was happening.

Please don't miss the fact that we had a 16-17 year old kid doing the right thing and taking responsibility. Now a days many run from it, this was a hard situation and she handled it well.

In OK if you live in city limits you better check the city code about discharging firearms or weapons in city limit.

In the country all bets are off. What you do is your business, as it should be.

Maybe, but in reading his entire account, the kid may have very only come to the door because there were witnesses. The kid not coming back the next day to check on the animal may be more telling here than intially knocking on the door...maybe.

On the question in general, I wonder how the responses would have gone if it had been a dog attacking another dog. I bet there would've been alot more "protect the dog with deadly force answers" than with the cat.

I don't get all the negativity about cats. My kids have a cat, and if it got killed, they would be just as sad over that, as if my lab got killed. A pet is still a pet.... The cat we have now is a heck aof a lot more useful than most dogs we've ever had...

as far as shooting the dog... that's a tough one. I think it would have been easier to just go over there and kick the dog to get it away from your cat, rather than taking a shot to shoot the dog. think about what you would do if it were your kid. would you take a shot at the dog if it were attacking your kid? I wouldn't want to take a cahnce on something like that.... one slight error could end in disaster...

my hat is off to the young girl for the nerve to walk up to your door ring your door bell and explain the situation to you face to face, most would grab their dog and leave and let you walk out to find out something happened after the fact! thank her for her honesty and move on... just my opinion

yeah, I meant to say something to this also... that takes a lot of guts to do that not knowing how someone would react.

I got 3 dogs we live way out in the country. Our dogs come and go as they please we have seen them on peoples porches a mile from home all 3 where asleep. I have also seen them streeetch out a stray cat. We also have a cat that we can not touch stays in the woods and just comes up and eats, sleeps and whatever it wants to do,dogs dont really mess with it. I figure alot depends on the dogs and their attuide get a none socail dog thats a threat verses a dog thats got manners, shoot lost my train of thought oh well

By the law, cat shouldnt have been outside off leash - just like the dog.

Good for the girl to come tell you.
We have over 10 dogs at the house. If they get out and kill a cat, we have problems. We also own cats as well. I try my best break my dogs off of cats but some are alittle hard headed. If a dog come over and was attacking my cats a good old beat down will happen. Bulldog, lab or little dog they will get it. If another dog comes over and attacks one of my dogs then I might have to move up to a differant method. Dog fights are never fun to break up. I am not going to shoot a dog over attacking one of my dogs or cats, the first time. Everyone gets a first chance, after that we have an issue that is going to be addressed.

Animals don't have to be leashed if they stay in your yard.
