If you would of been in the yard at the time, your cat would probaly be ok because you would have stopped the scuffle by kicking the dog across the street. If the dog turned on you then thats a different story. I think its pretty good that the girl had the nerve to knock on your door and let you know what happened. She could of very easy just went on with her business and not told you. To answer your question I would not of shot the dog in front of the girl, I would just of done my best to run the dog off.

I would be asking them for a new cat. But at the sam time they may have been buying themselves a new dog.

I would have given the dog a bacon strip and looked for another cat he could get, Stop,, outside cats? So its ok for outside cats to rape and pillage bird and squirell nests, kill and leave for dead, then come home for a nice plate of friskies? What is wrong with the mentality of cat owners?

Bet she did too. Dog probably should have been on a leash but wasn't.Glad you didn't HAVE to shoot the dog. Very touchy subject, read 185 posts about shooting a dog.
x2....all depends on what type of dog were talking about.

So whats wrong with dogs chasing squirrels and sometimes catching them and killing them just to play with them. Animals are going to do what they do so if that concerns you then I hear fish are easy to get along with.

While I respect the girl for admitting the attack if I had been there I would have shot the dog without hesitation. I love my pets and believe it is my responsibility to protect them from harm. Dead dog, end of discussion.

Leash law? Partains to all pets. A very sensitive subject.

                    Are you questing my mentality?

I never asked for commentary on the virtues of cats. For the record I am not a big cat lover. But my granddaughters LOVE those cats more than you can understand.

Just so you fully understand all the details, the man and wife from next door and their two kids (ages 4 and 8) witnessed the entire event. The man told me he tried to get the dog (about a 40 or 50 pound mix of some kind) off cat but could not get to it quick enough. So I don’t think I could have either, nor am I sure I would have “kicked” an out of control dog and placed myself in harm’s way.

I was pleased the girls came to the door, but did they have any real options since the folks next door saw what happen. By the way, the girls have not come back to check on the cat, so are they really the hero for stepping up to the door? Life is full of unanswered questions.

Nope, i'm pretty sure i read it correct. You would have given the dog a treat for attacking the cat, and you feel that its wrong for cats to attack bird and squirrel nests.

RESPONSIBLE dog owners do not have this problem. My point was directed at the majority of cat owners that allow them to the outdoors and then home at night to sleep. There is no reason for a HOUSECAT to roam free.
                          Are y'all dog shooters?

So why would you assume the cat was a house cat? It was not.

                            Are y'all dog shooters?
I have not read where anyone even hints they are dog shooters.

I am still missing your point unless you are just a cat hater and a dog lover.

Lets turn this one around on you, if it was a bobcat or mountain lion that attacted your dog what would your reaction be? After all, thats what cats do.

In my area , people lets there cats roam at night and kill as they please. If I were to let me dog roam at night, he would be caught and euthanized.

This may not be your case though. you may have just walked outside with your cat and had the dog grab it. either way , if it was a strange animal that came onto your property and attacked your pet, then it is their responsibility. You should ask them for the value of your cat (DEBATABLE). the courts would award you as much I think.

If I had been in a position to safely do so, yes I would have killed the dog to protect my pet. I am the owner of the pet and it is my responsibility to protect said pet if it is on my land. If my cat (or dog) were to wander off into someone's yard I would take no action against any person or animal that attacked it. It is also my responsibility to keep my animals in my yard.

So, to answer your question, I would have killed the dog.
