    Fence Posts in Rock

So I'm helping a buddy with his ranch in Del Rio. I need to know what the best way is to deal with the rock and the TBH braintrust always comes up with someting. What is the preferred method for installing fence posts into solid rock that is 6 feet thick. Is there a special fence post pounder that can install them? I thought about getting a tractor with a hydraulic post pounder but I'm not sure if that will sink them in this rock. I talked to a guy who said a jack-hammer would work to make a hole and then put the t-post in and concrete it in.

Real world - what have you done that works guys?

Built the fence on top of the ground. Chisel out your corners and pull posts, then the regular posts just float on top of the ground.

This has been discussed before so you should get plenty of good solid answers.

I think I remember one needing the following items:

        Generator
Big electric Hilti Hammer drill with a 1" bit or so.
        Large air compressor
        Air operated t-post driver

Knock the plate off the t-post and drive the bare t-post into the hole created by the big hilti hammer drill using the air post driver

Also could sub large rebar for t-posts but it may cost more to buy.

I just did some of this up at our ranch in Kerr county.... I used the big compressor, air drill with 2' extension and drill bit, t-post driver.... I think all of this rented for like $55-$60 a day... Drilled the holes, knocked the metal plates off the post and drove them in with the air t-post driver... The drill is heavier than it looks, all in all it worked out pretty good!!!!

How much you willing to spend? The best I've found is a jackhammer mounted on a backhoe or excavater, just hammer a hole in the rock cement a post of your choosing. You can rent it at the same place as the handheld and its 4 times faster (if you can operate a backhoe)

                        Too complicated...

Generator, Heavy duty hammer drill, 1-1/4" drill bit. Set into place with a T-post driver. No concrete required...

Great ideas guys. Is the drill electric or air powered by the compressor? I need to figure out how to get the compressor close to where the work needs to be done.
