Elk Mount has to be redone

So I got the phone call from the taxidermist about 2 weeks ago saying my elk mount was complete. I was finally able to get out there today to pick it up and was greeted by the lady at the front. The first thing out of her mouth was, "We have a small problem" which was like somebody punched me in the gut. I immediately start pondering possibilities...cape was ruined...mount fell off the wall and broke...it was stolen/lost...etc etc. She walked me back to the showroom and showed me the mount and explained the problem.

When I dropped it off I requested a WALL PEDESTAL MOUNT with a hard right turn to show off the double main beam. They supposedly have to custom build the base as no wall pedestal mount is commercially available from taxidermy supply houses.

When I viewed the mount on the wall in the showroom it was a STANDARD SHOULDER MOUNT with the hard right turn which is approx. $200 cheaper. She explained that they had received 8 or 9 elk heads all at the same time in Septemeber and received the hides back from tanning at the same time and must have rushed the mount and made the error. She said if I was unhappy with the mount they would remount it at their expense the way I requested and should have it finished in about another month. The mount looked great but wasn't what I had originally requested.

I asked them to remount it the way I had asked but with only a 45 degree head turn instead of the hard 90 degree. I have used the same taxidermist for over 20 years and have a wall full of gorgeous mounts that he has done in the past so I know he will have it redone correctly but it was still a little frustrating.

I will also not mention the taxidermists name so don't even ask...I want to give him the opportunity to fix it and have faith that it will be nothing short of perfection upon its return. I was hesitant to even post the pictures but wanted to get opinions on what others would do in this case.

Think I would have just taken that one....on their dime of course!! But its your trophy, do as you see fit!!

Things go wrong sometimes. Its frustrating, but it happens. The deal breaker for me is how its handled. They seem to be doing you right. If this is the first thing in 20 years I'd let em fix it and go on. Nice looking elk.

#1 thing is how they deal with the situation. They want to make it right, so let them. It's hard to please everybody, but they acknowledged the situation, explained it to you and offered to re-do the mount how you want it. Stuff happens, but you've been happy in the past and you'll be happy this time, it will just take a little longer. It will work out in your favor in the long run, so work with them, let them make it right and you'll probably enjoy a little better service on the next one. If they were trying to hide it or blame the mistake on you, then it's a different story...

I think they are doing you right. I actually think the 45 degree turn will show him off much better.

Ouch! That taxidermist is going to take a big hicky on that one! Changing that mount to a wall pedestal is a chore in itself. Changing the thing to a 45 degree on top of that, is worth a heck of a lot more than the $200 extra. In the end if he makes you happy, I think a generous tip will be in order for changing from a 90 to a 45. That was an after-the-fact change. Just my .02. Post pics when you get it back.

I would rather have it with the mistake if they are going to use (another animals cape) to do the new mount. I have several deer in my house that are mounted with other capes, but just prefere deer mounted and made to be like they looked in real life...or as close as can be expected within reason. I think good taxis are really just frustrated artist's anyhows. I hope this deal works out for you..thats a beautiful Elk, I am sure they will do what you ask this time around

I think you should name the taxi, he/ she deserves to be named. Anyone willing to admit a mistake and fix it knowing it will cost them is a taxi people need to know about. We all make mistakes in life, this taxi is doing the right thing and should get the props for it. Good luck on the re-do and very cool elk.

I'm not upset by any means...was just excited to get it back but don't mind waiting another month or two to have what I originally requested. I just hope they can salvage the cape and have enough to do the wall pedestal. Mistakes happen and I know they will get it fixed. They have been extemely honest and I will continue to do business with them in the future because of it.

You always run the risk of getting a cape that is not in the condition as yours. Hope it works out. Honest people like that are hard to beat.
