.222 Rem compared to .223 Rem?

Anybody have a good comparison between the two? This is for a 4'11", 110 pound lady in a small frame rifle(rossi or Remington Model 799). Recoil is a huge factor for her and I want to keep her happy


My Sig Sauer 556 rifle kicks too much for her so finding less recoil is imperative. She loved the .204 ruger, but I want a heavier bullet.

The .222 seems a little better, but in a 6.5 pound rifle, will it make a huge difference between the two calibers? I can go pick up a .223 Model 799 tomorrow morning, all day long if I wanted to but finding the .222 is harder than surgery right now.

The .222 has a slightly shorter case and slower velocity. Very mild recoil.

Its allot cheaper to shoot the 223 than the 222. That being said I like the 222 way more in a bolt gun, I don't know why cause they are so similar but I do. However she prob wouldn't be able to tell a difference other than a 223 is somewhat louder than a 222.

Something to think about:
If she is recoil sensitive look into guns that have or you can add laminate stocks and bull barrels to to increase the weight.

the Remington 799 is a very petite mauser action as the barrel and action are made by Zastava in Serbia

I inherited my mom's 222 savage. She killed a few deer with it, never took her more than one shot. Her longest shot was 200 yards, really impressed my dad! Since I reload I have it set up with 35 gr vmax bullets, it makes a deluxe coon killer.
I have never noticed any recoil, but then I'm not very sensitive about that. My wife weighs 100 pounds soaking wet, and she doesn't have any problem with it.

I would choose the 223 over the 222. I own a Rossi single shot 223 and the recoil is not noticeable, plus its alot cheaper to buy some cheap monarch 223 or any other surplus ammo to just go shoot with.

If you end up with a 16" barrel I have a lot of data for reduced 223 loads you could play around with.

either 55(3259 fps) or 64 grain(3020 fps) bullets in .223


Anybody know the formula for figuring out recoil?

I can tell you from physics, recoil will be so close to the same due to conservation of energy that you wont be able to tell a difference. You are pushing a bullet with a pretty much set amount of energy out of the gun, based on weight its either faster or slower but again the energy it pretty much = at the muzzle.

The 223 will let you shoot a little heavier bullet at the expense of a slight increase in recoil, but if she is shooting a sig 556 and its too much then it might not be recoil she isn't liking. cause the sig will have less felt recoil then the bolt gun will any day of the week. The 223 is pretty loud especially when compared to a 222 wich is about the same as a 22 mag. Find a way to add weight to her gun bore the stock and fill it with lead if you have too.

That makes sense guys. She can shoot the Sig for about a mag full, then puts it down. Maybe I will just have to work with her some more. The recoil didn't seem like it bothered her too much at the range though. I think its the .204 thing. Once she shot that rifle, she didn't look back

The .204 just isn't enough gun for an inexperienced shooter like her....heck, I'd have a hard time finding the confidence to deer hunt with a .204.

It might help but I think it would have to be very soft to take anything out of 3 to 4 pounds. Not to beat a dead horse but why do you think most 50bmg's weigh nearly 30 pounds. I would realy try to find a way to add weight, it not only helps recoil it improves accuracy.
