I am a avid fan of the old 222, but given the fact that things have change since I was younger, I would go with the 223. Any cartridge that was adopted by the arm services is going to be around for a while. So are componets. Both can be tack drivers but as with anything, handloading is the key. Still, wouldn't trade the old tripple duce in for the 223. I also found that my 222 doesn't like a stoked to the hilt load. That's the beauty of tailoring loads.
Is she using proper form in shouldering/mounting the rifle? Is she keeping her cheek down on the stock? Is the stock too long for her, or does it fit well?
I wouldn't think recoil would be much of an issue for anyone in a semi-automatic .223 if they are holding the gun right and it fits them reasonably well.
I grew up hunting deer with a .222 and my daughter hunted with the same gun until this past season when she moved up to a 308. We have had great luck with the round. Very mild recoil and very accurate. The 50 grain soft point has worked very well on hill country deer.
.223 in a bolt action rifle will have little or no kick. Just add a little weight to the rifle (bull barrel) and kick will be nonexistant. .223 ammo is very easy to find.
A semi auto will have less preserved recoil than a bolt gun. The functioning of the operating system runs out the free recoil over a longer time frame. Look into a semi and she may be able to go as high as a 6.5
dont overlook muzzle blast, women are more sensitive to it than men almost always... use very good hearing protection especially when shes practicing,
the earlier suggestion about a mercury tube in the stock is a very good one,, did a few and shot some several years ago when i worked at a gun shop, basically the mercury tube is not full, and its put in at an angle so when the shot is fired and the recoil starts the mercury is trying to run uphill into the empty end of the cylinder,, very effective and fairly common in high end shotguns used by competion shotgunners,,, it will also add weight to the gun overall,,, that along with a pachmayer or sims recoil pad should just about make it recoil free..
Great choice with the .223! Both rounds are effective deer-killers. Anyone who disputes this has obviously never seen the damage these fast little bullets can dish out.
Make sure she has on a quality pair of earmuffs or earplugs. I would think your Sig probly has about the same felt recoil as my AR, which is next to nothing. However, I know my AR is one of the loudest rifles I have fired.
I'm starting to think it was more of the flash/bang factor than the recoil....how can my little sister shoot a 243 WSSM just fine and shes half her age.
I mean seriously, I shot this rifle one handed today and stayed on target
Recoil pads anyone???? I'm thinking Limbsaver
I just found out tonight also coyotes are free game here in Nevada. I don't even need a permit...just go out and shoot. I think I might have my new pred gun as of today
