A good animal broker may be the way to go for someone getting into this for the first time. The animal brokers that we use guarantee live delivery. If they show up and one of the deer is dead, then we do not owe for that deer. Not all animal brokers will do this. Good references on animal brokers is the way to go. There are good ones and there are some that are a little shady. You might emphasize that you want animals that are freshly caught. Best, is if they catch them and then take them directly to your ranch. Hope this helps!

        2x on using a broker.

If you are really getting into it, as in breed, buy, sell, and not just hunt, you'll want to go ahead and start getting the equipment, otherwise a broker is much easier if you're just going to turn some loose for personal hunting.

Being able to capture is especially good for some species. There are a couple species that aren't worth a darn for meat, but you can get some $ for females in live sale. Those are the ones most likely to get overpopulated as your hunters won't shoot the females.

Likewise, there are a couple good books out there. Exotics on the Range: The Texas Example, Field Guide to Exotics, and a couple others are available from A&M press. Would recommend anyone get those books before turning animals loose - good info to have on species, what they eat, special requirements, and what interbreeds. Also has some good info on capture and pen construction.

Would also recommend a membership to the EWA www.exoticwildlifeassociation.com. They are the major industry champion for the propogation of exotic hoofstock, some great resources available thru them, and they are the main group fighting further restrictions on the industry and don't be naive b/c Texas is a bit of a bubble - there are many of people that want to see the industry ended, and many many more (hunters included) that are indifferent.

I just got off the phone with my broker. I have him looking for 8 chocolate fallow. 8 blackbuck. 8 sitka (with thas cross blood-line)

He said that the deer market was kind of in the crapper and that prices were way down.

Thanks guys. Feel free to PM me any broker references :-)

I've picked up the books mentioned & the EWA seems to be a good networking opportunity as well.

...as txnrog said, I'd be cautious on getting sika...besides their other faults (fiesty and competive with WT's), they are noisy and alert and when they start barking (if you are hunting other critters on your property), they will alert EVERYTHING !! There is an exotic auction this next friday (feb 12) in Huntsville (I'll be there! ) which is worth attending just to see what going prices are and what is being sold....plus lots of deversity of critters.....

I would be there if it wasn't 4 hours away from our ranch gate. I may try and go to one in Lampasas sometime in the next couple months.

Its just easier to pick up the phone and have a broker find/deliver them - for me anyway. But i bet those auctions would be tons of fun.

Your broker will probably be buying at those auctions. The value of getting a broker IMO is for doing direct breeder to buyer transactions if he's got a good network, but it's much easier in many cases for the brokers to buy at auction, esp if the client is antsy to buy. You see them at every auction, there are 3-4+ brokers buying a hodge-podge of animals that come thru.

that I dont want MitchBCS to know about cause its a secret...
fallow are cheap...100.oo per doe...BBuck are also cheap right now 200 to 300 per doe...maybe less in some instances...basically the market is in the tank....but..IMO the most important thing you need is to use one of the game ranches mentioned earlier where they are set up to capture what you need. I nickle and dime my animals and its a very slow process buying and selling. Its easier to eat the ones I dont have any use for. I would also advise you to buy one or two extra of whatever species to compensate for accidental death. You need to be willing to pay a little more than what I mentioned...IF.....they are healthy and laying down calmly in the trailer...darting one at a time is miserably slow...buy young ones, cheaper...they grow fast anyways...if you want BBuck one or two at a time you can come dart mine..I have 3 young males ready to go at 300 each...but you do the darting...my biggest BB is old and pricey at 1500...hope my rambling helps
I already know about this secret spot you speak of snoopy
