    Fallow / Blackbuck prices??

I am looking at ordering some Blackbuck and chocolate Fallow for our little high fenced place outside of Fort Worth.

Does anyone have any idea what the going rates are these days? It used to be around 200/F and 600 for 1st year males? I think thats what we paid for our Axis anyway...

    Thanks for the help
    -Walker

Contact Keith @ Keith Johns Outdoors. He has a good size herd of blackbuck runnin round, he's a great guy, and he'll treat ya right. Just got back from there last wknd ... had a great hunt. I'm tryin to get the money up to book an axis hunt in June/July. And, its only a 2hr easy drive from Austin!

Stupid question but how big of an area do you have fenced, I've always wanted to raise a few exotics just for the fun of it.

I have 2 neighbors that have exotics on less than 15 acres each. One raises sika's and sales them to game ranches. The other neighbor has 4 Zebra,8 fallow,4 axis and 3 blackbuck. They just sit on the porch and watch their critters.

We have about 300 acres. Its been high fenced since 2000 and that was probably the best decesion we ever made. Its amazing what 300 acres can grow if you don't shoot anything, and you neighbors are not blasting every deer that walks over the fence.

We put axis on it when we fenced it, but i want some blackbuck (b/c they dont compete with the whitetails) And then a few chocolate fallow or sitka to look at.

I own 3 bull elk, 17 BB antelope, 3 axis bucks, 4 fallow doe, and some other stuff that I dont want MitchBCS to know about cause its a secret...fallow are cheap...100.oo per doe...BBuck are also cheap right now 200 to 300 per doe...maybe less in some instances...basically the market is in the tank....but..IMO the most important thing you need is to use one of the game ranches mentioned earlier where they are set up to capture what you need. I nickle and dime my animals and its a very slow process buying and selling. Its easier to eat the ones I dont have any use for. I would also advise you to buy one or two extra of whatever species to compensate for accidental death. You need to be willing to pay a little more than what I mentioned...IF.....they are healthy and laying down calmly in the trailer...darting one at a time is miserably slow...buy young ones, cheaper...they grow fast anyways...if you want BBuck one or two at a time you can come dart mine..I have 3 young males ready to go at 300 each...but you do the darting...my biggest BB is old and pricey at 1500...hope my rambling helps

Walker, I go to most of the sales in the area around our ranch, and fallow/sika does are usually around $100-200, BB does $200-300, young fallow/sika bucks $250-450 depending on who's buying. BB bucks 4-6" are usually around $400, 6-16 $400-600, 16-20" usually below 1000, and 20+ can be anywhere between $1000-1500. 'shooter' fallow tend to go up from $900 or so, and pretty decent shooter sika can be had for less than $1000 as long as they are the dark jap sika - dybowski or manchurian looking sika are considerably more expensive. When you buy will factor in, in the late summer and fall, shooter prices are usually higher, and stockers are low, while in the spring it's typically reversed. Just follows what most people are looking to do at a given time of the year. Prices are very much variable depending on alot of factors, generally prices are down, but in many areas with BB winter kill (like ours) bb are probably going to be pricey this spring.

Would probably advise going direct to a breeder to purchase as some species get very stressed at sales - bb in particular (and you have no idea how they have been handled), plus you can look at their other stock to assess quality.

Plan on spending about 25% more to purchase directly from a breeder, but it's generally worth it, unless you know who's stock is in the sale. There are sales in Lampasas, and Huntsville which might be worth going to from your area - wheither or not you buy, they are pretty neat to see the animals that come thru and monitor the prices. I went to probably half a dozen sales before I bid on anything.

Think long & hard about what species you put on. Sika can breed rapidly, and can be very difficult to control once established. Fallow take a fair amount of time to mature (6-8 yrs) for the best trophies. There are some other super exotics that you may want to look at, prices on the high-end stuff are really reasonable now.

Figure on a 20% loss rate on your initial stocking, and stock accordingly. Also figure on a periodic purchase of new genetics, it's best to build a herd from multiple ranches' stock.

Yoters will take a heavy toll on the BB's/young exotics. If your neighbors are constantly cleaning hogs next door or have cattle anywhere near, you will definately have yoter problems. I help a few ranchers (cattle/exotic) around the Austin and Refugio area rid there properties of these pesky varmits. I will have no problem traveling up your way free of charge to take down any varmit problem you have. My brother and I are year round varmit specialists and have been hunting for 20+ years. We are not interested in trading or making money, just want to increase our skills at shooting the elusive YOTERS! We have a 3 man team consisting of a caller, shot gunner (as we like to say) and of course the varmit exterminator/BUSHMASTER 223....

Call me if you have any questions. I do not mind educating ranch owners on how to keep these critters away from there livestock as well...

Good Luck, feel free to email cmcguire80@gmail.com for more info....

Cheers and good luck with the exotics,

                            C. Mcguire

                              Farmdog,
Thanks for the info. That really helps me out alot. I agree that you should buy the exotics young and let them grow. We did that with our axis and it worked out well. I really don't have any interest in shooting them - maybe someday down the road, but they are cool to look at, and being 45 minutes from Fort Worth, its nice to have something different for my friends / clients to look at when I take them out there.
