    Stihl Chainsaw Mechanics Question

Well it looks like one of the guys last weekend ran unmixed gas in my MS310 and toasted it. I'm working on getting qoutes on getting it rebuilt and they range from $250-$400. A new saw is around $450. I have never had a rebuilt saw so I'm kinda leary. This saw has never given me any problems and I don't want to spend a bunch on a saw that will always give me problems. Anyone have experience with rebuilt saws?

Oh and yes I learned my lesson!

No experience with rebuilt saws, but for over half the cost of new, I would just by a new one. Keep the old one in case you need any parts.

Buy a new one and don't let anyone borrow the new one

That is exactly why I do not loan out a chainsaw

I have a chainsaw in the store room that started having issues. Had it rebuilt and it was never the same. Then again it was a Poulan, and I was young and not in the know

What sucks is I was there. The person that was running the saw must have grabbed the gas can by the generator and filled her up. I was splitting wood at the time and was never asked about what gas to put in it.

If all it needs is a piston, that is way to much to spend. If it also needs a cylinder and piston the price is about right. It cannot be determined what you need until it is taken apart.

He said that the piston was scored. He did not mention anything about the cylinder. The saw did not lock up.

Matt rebuild it yourself. Come on you built a bay house you can do rebuild a chainsaw.

If the piston is scored you will also need a new cylinder head. Head and piston kit, parts, should run around 1/2 the price of a new saw.

That sucks! Hopefully the guy that screwed it up is helping out with the funds to purchase a new one.

No experience with rebuilt saws but I like the idea mentioned above of getting a new one and keeping the old one for parts.

                  Good luck!

My nephew did the same thing to mine, the mechanic warned me it would probably never be the same. He was right.

I'm not going to ask, but I hope he offers.

My self I would tear it apart and rebuild it. Not a big deal. It is not like you have to split the case or anything like that. Pull the cylinder and go from there.

Take it to Scribner's buddy Mickey. This is what he does at Acme Saw and Tool in Victoria....he can tell you how the cow eats cabbage.

Get a new one!...... Write it off. Tell the tax people that you use it to gut sharks.

My wife ran my dad's over about two years ago. I ended up buying my dad a new saw and had the old one rebuilt. I am now the owner of a rebuild Stihl. It runs like a scalded cat and as long as you keep the blades clean, it will cut like there is no tomorrow. Financially speaking, you are probably better off buying new.
