Ditto on the getting in shape part. Those Walker hounds are in much better shape than I am. We rode horses and mules and if going that route make sure you are comfortable riding--guides told me they have folks every year show up that have never been on a horse and are scared to death. Get comfortable shooting (or positioned to shoot) up in the air.

I'm jealous. Not only can't we shoot a cougar in this state, shooting one in another state and transporting it into CA is also an offense. There's one been seen in the creek at the end of my street, all they do is post silly signs.

Hunt hard! They're supposed to taste like chicken!

I have eaten the backstraps from a mountain lion, and it was mmm mmm good.... Funny thing though.. My finger nails grew like crazy for days, and I kept wanting to climb trees.....

Everything I've read over the years on multiple web sites has said cougar meat is very tasty. One of my polictially incorrect CA replies to "how does it taste" is "like a cougar or condor steak".

We hunted NM a few weeks back on horseback w/ Frontier outfitters for lion. Top notch guides and dogs. Man I loved watching those dogs work. Didn't get a lion but being on horseback in those mountains was as close to heaven as I've been. Good luck.
