I have run into this before. You need to call the txpw they will give you a special tag to put on the antlers if for some reason you want to take the deer to the taxidermist. We had a really good 159" 10 point that we hunted for 3 years. we found him dead during the spring shed hunt. we werent sure what to do so we called the game warden. he came out and tagged the deer with a special tag and gave us permission in writing to possess the deer. he told us to do this anytime we find one in this condition.

Ok here is another question. Once the deer is at the taxi to get the meat processed, we normally get the heads cut, so we can do our own euro mounts. how do we have proff that we shot the deer and didnt cut it off the highway or something of that nature?

your processor should give you a receipt. When i dropped my buck off and took the head and cape to the taxi, the processor wrote me up a receipt and that is so if stopped, the GW can call them and verify they have the rest of the animal and the tag.

wrong about the tag, good idea to call the GW

A WRD should accompany the head but that may get into a GW question since you found it dead in a fence. If you had to tag it than that would mean you would have to tag shed from the woods right?

Meat was still salvageable(sp?), but it was not "harvested" by legal means, he shouldn't have had to use his tags on it. Same as when a car hits a deer, GW comes out and "releases" the meat to local children's home, etc. GW tags deer, not the "finder"

Wait until they get caught! VERY illegal. If you ever see anyone doing this, call them in. TxDOT employees are often the worst.
