    Deer in Fence question

If a deer is caught in a fence, and dies (still in the fence) and you find it a couple days later, is it legal to cut the head if in fact it is a good buck? We were talking about it this weekend and never came to an answer so I told them I would post it to the green screen!!!

I would assume so since you can leagally hunt for sheds and such. Some guy found a monster buck in the spring that was dead and kept the skull for a trophy, with the landowners permission. I cant remember the state but that is the same kind of thing.

Correct, it must be tagged or call the game warden and let him make the decision.

ok so if you find it after the season, would that be considered that legal since he has been dead the whole season?

I dont think you would have to tag it. Accoring to TPWD the tag stays with the carcass not the head. A WRD should accompany the head but that may get into a GW question since you found it dead in a fence. If you had to tag it than that would mean you would have to tag shed from the woods right?

Yeah I understand if the deer is still alive but if he has been there for hours/days/weeks and you cant process the meat... do you just leave the head there if it has alot of bone?

I would say the same rule applies dead/alive..Notify Game Warden......Hes probably going to tell you to tag it and take the head...

I dont think it would be any different than finding a skull and antlers laying in the dirt in the summer that died in the winter... but contacting a warden would be the smart thing to do anyway..
