I have an 01 F150 4X4. I drive 65 miles round trip four days a week. I was contemplating a work car before gas shot through the roof. I found one when gas was rising and never looked back. I got a 98 corolla with 48K on it. I paid $3500 and average 35mpg v. 14. The biggest benefit is the reduction in miles on my truck. With what they cost new I'll keep this one that much longer.

I upgraded to a 3/4 ton diesel that gets better mileage than my 1/2 ton gas truck and saved myself $150/ month in payments. It also has a crew cab and long bed with a goosneck hitch.

going to buy the wife a civic, not really totally the gas thing but she is wearing out her NICE car by commuting to work. She has put over 105K mile on it the last 2.5 years. Can't afford to buy her a limited model every 2 or 3 years. So she is going to wear out a civic and keep her othe car to run around in. And yes we will break even on the payments vs gas per month.

i mad the swap just before it went up bad,,, traded an 01 silverado 2500 crew cab 4x4 with 6.0 gas,, which on a good day got 11 mpg, and there wern't many of them averaged about 9 combined mileage... for a 07 ram 1500 4x4 quad cab, which gets 14 on a bad day and 17 on a good one,, very impressed with that little 4.7 v8 got way more acceleration than the chevy and of course a better ride

We moved down from an Expedition to a 4Runner(24mpg) years ago and then on down to a Chevy Cobalt(34mpg) in 2008. When I lost my company truck I got a Pathfinder (17mpg) but it wasn't what I wanted, the new 96 Ford F350 crew diesel gets 21 mpg which I am happy with.

I sold my '95 Chevy 1500 with a 6.0 that got 11 city 15 highway and bought a used '08 Tacoma 4cyl that gets 23 city 26 highway. Made enough money on the sale to only have to pay 2 grand out of pocket for the Tacoma. Needless to say I went from filling up at least once a week to maybe filling up twice a month so the downsize was definitely worth it for me.

A paid for car allows you to buy a lot of gas! The biggest mistake people and the govt have allowed struggling people to do this year is to trade in a paid for car and get a nice new monthly car payment getting 30mpg.

Now if your current vehicle is paid for and you are paying cash for the next one, Toyota corollas are awesome, my 73 yo dad was a Caddy man for 20 years, when he rolled his last one, he decided to get a corolla, he now gets 42 mpg and loves his little car!

I just bought a mid size suv and am selling my V8 F150. Toyota highlanders had the best mpg for the price I saw, but I ended with a Trailblazer because it was the right price and it didn't look like a big station wagon!

I sold my truck this week but it wasn't to down size. It was to get rid of the payment. I'm now on the prowl for a 80 model shortwide 4x4 chevy. Gas mileage will be about the same (had a 07 vortecmax chevrolet) but I'll have the title. Not the bank.
