I have 3 Glocks a 30(.45),a 23(.40) and a 19(9mm), and I love them all. I carry the 30 because I like having 10+ 1 of 45. If you can't shoot what you carry well then you are asking for trouble.
tvc184 thanks. this infomation is correct, and is what is needed today. no hype, but fact. a shot with a bmg.50 to the foot, may take some of it off, is just not as good as a .22 in the eye socket. all take this test. have your wife wake you up three hours before the regular time. and ask a question. "what do you want to eat?" now, have you ever fired a 12 guage or .44 in a small room at 3:00 am? home defense shot low, aim high. self defense, shot high, aim low. simple. be in controll before the shooting starts.
The only rounds that counts are the ones that hit the target. Like a lot of the other LEO's here, I've carried .357, 9mm, .40, and .45.
My personal choices are:
#1 - Custom Caspian .45 with 4 port barrel - 8+1 of Corbon 165 gr HP
#2 - Kimber Pro Carry - aluminum frame, steel barrel - 8+1 90gr frangible -2000fps at the muzzle - very concealable and quick/easy to deploy.
#3 - Keltec .380 7+1 Corbons - ALWAYS have this on me
#4 - Someone mentioned 10mm - S&W 1006 - 9+1 - Corbons - Harrts recoil reducing guide rod (mercury & ball bearings) - VERY accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Drops pigs like a sledge hammer!
Bottom line with ANY caliber is, of course, shot placement.
Training and the proper mind set are essential. If you're going to carry, be prepared by training realisticallyand have the proper mindset to be VERY violent until the threat is no longer a threat!
Gunfights happen quickly and take what seems like minutes but are, in reality, over in a split second.
If you know you're going to be in a gunfight...bring a shotgun and all your friends with THEIR shotguns!!!
