Every year the company I work for buys a couple of deer hunts for our customers and some employees. Last year I was lucky enough to be given a shot at a real nice mid 130 class 10 pointer; thanks to my boss. Well this year due to company expense cut backs, it wasn't looking good for me to get a chance at a deer. Although my boss is scheduled to take a group of customers on a top notch deer hunting trip, here in South Texas. Well one of the customers called last week and said he didn't think he was going to make the trip. I then told my boss; I guess I can play customer for a weekend. Well I guess the bluff worked cause this morning he said the customer confirmed he was not going to make the trip. So guess what I was told? Yup, the good o'l boss man said; well I guess you can take his spot and shoot his deer.. Now here's the deal, I can shoot the deer with bow or rifle, so of course I want to shoot with my bow. So I then ask the boss man what size of deer I'm good for, and he said 160!! The ranch guide said he will guarantee a shot at a 140-150 class with a bow but a shot at a 160 with a rifle. Also the boss said he don't think we will make it back out this year, if we do not kill this time. My question to you guys, is what would you guys use for a weapon if you were put in this situation
Here's the hunt story and pics..Enjoy!!
The ranch was located in south texas about 15 miles north of Bruni,TX. We arrived early Friday afternoon for our first hunt but only had 1 very nice 8 pointer come in about fifty yards out. We did get to see a very nice buck cross a pipeline about 400 yards away. The next morning we had nothing but doe's and javi's but saw what we thought was the same buck cross the pipeline. When we got done with our morning hunt,we decided to set up my pop up blind around the area we had seen the big buck cross. That afternoon we only saw 1 buck but it was a very nice buck. He came in right at dark but we could only see him with bino's. I drew my bow back but I just could not make out my sights. We went in for the day and dinner, and all I could think about was if that was going to be my only opportunity. The next morning I got up only to be very discouraged by the 40+mph winds. We decided to go out anyways and give it a shot. When we walked up to my blind it was gone, the wind had turn it over and blew it in the brush about 40 yards. We quickly set it back up and jumped in for the hunt. An hour into the hunt, we caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a good buck walking down the road headed to us. I quickly got my bow,set my release, and when I looked up all I could see was horns making there way into my shooting lane. I drew back and waited for the right angle, he then took a couple more steps and I then thought it's time. I let the slick trick fly at 16 yards and it found it's mark. He took of into the brush and stood there about 25 yards away, he then disappeared and CRASH!! Man what a good feeling that was, the arrow was drenched in blood but the blood trail was not so good. We basically walked to were we heard him crash and there he was laying dead. I figured out that the reason for a poor blood trail was cause I placed the shot a little high. But he is dead and mine, I will say that I have never seen so much blood were a dead deer layed. I broke two ribs and the internals were destroyed. After all the pics and celebration we had him scored. He was a main frame 10 point, with 4 scorable kickers around his basis and brow's. He was scored as a 14 pointer with a grand total of 173 6/8. He field dressed at 158lb and was aged at 6.5yrs old. Man I just cant believed this happen to me!! Thanks again for all the encouragement and good times TBH!!!! Here's the long waited pics boy's and girls..LATES!!
