I don't usually call but I have a few set-ups that are not over feeders so I think I will give a sequense or two a try this weekend and next week. Not to hijack the thread but, do you grunt and bleat or just one or the other?

Commanche county 10-15-09 I called in a 2 1/2 year old 4 pt. I saw him at 50 yards leaving the area and thought he was a spike. I grunted agressively at him and he ran in like he was going to end me. He came to 8 yards. He kept looking around. He left and then I called again. He came running in again to my other side and stopped at 5 yards. He left again and I called him back for the third time. Each time he kept swinging his head around looking for the noise. This was all about sunset. As I was getting ready to climb down from my stand I spooked him. He was standing directly below me.

About 2 weeks earlier, I called in a 3 1/2 year old, but he wasn't as sure. He came to the edge and just looked around before leaving.

I learned something neat about calling this weekend. Do not use a fawn in distress call if there is a chance of cattle hearing your call. A big cow came running towards me after a used a fawn in distress call. I am sure she beleived a calf was in danger because she was gunning for blind and only stopped when I opened my blind door and I had to trow rocks at the darn thing to get it to leave.

The deer did not respond to my grunt or bleat for me this weekend.

Use calls all the time. If it is right they work if not they won't. Horns are the same but you do not know if you do not try.

I was ground hunting and jumped 2 does last week and they ran off about 60 yards. I made a bleat call with the true talker and they both stopped- made another and one of the does ran at me back to 30 yards- i could not get a shot- she evantually turned and ran off-

about 30 minutes later i saw yearling buck at a feeder about 75 yards away and everytime he looked in my direction i would grunt- i slowly walked up, got to 30 yards away- too young to shoot but it was fun none the less- he just kept eating and left on his own terms

i found some sites that have deers sounds and practiced for about 30 minutes the night before the hunt- helped a lot

they can if they do not sound right- the biggest mistakes i have read about is the frequency the call is made, the loudness and the duration-

google whitetail deer calling or deer communication and all that- good stuff out there-

Kinda like walking on a plane speaking arabic- if done right it may not be scary, if done wrong, everybody craps their pants

I have had mixed luck- sometimes they just run off flagging their tail and other times they turn around and walk in for a shot-

mix the calling with some esterous or tarsal gland---
