What do ya'll know about army worms?

Buddy of mine called me this evening and said the army worms have wiped out his 2.5 acre foodplot, basically overnight! He said they were all over it today and it was nearly down to the dirt! 2 days ago it was 6-8" tall!!!

We planted our plots at about the same time (around 9-12). I sure hope mine don't disappear by the a.m. !

He said he'll plant his again next week.

Lots of hard work and $$$ down the drain.

the farmers up here got hit and lost hundreds of acreas of winter wheat. They replanted over the last few days.

They are some voracious little critters. You can literally watch them move across a field. About the only way to stop them is to spray an insecticide. Good luck with yours staying safe.

Dad and little brother had to spray their hay fields yesterday.

          Sevin kills them pretty good.

One of the doctors I work with was talking about using dish soap but I have no idea what ratio to mix. He said it killed them quick and it is a heck of alot cheaper

They usually come out after a dry spell followed by rain and cooler temps

          Sorry for your loss

Malathion will knock em down. We get em in our hayfields and alfalfa patches down here pretty regular. They are worse in the dry years

Yeah they are a pain. I heard some old timers say that you can kill them with clorox as a quick, cheap kill. Mix one gallon of clorox to 100 gallons of water. They told me it will only bleach the tops of the grass, but kills the worms. Never tried it myself. Gotta love small town old timers!!

Ain't got time to spray em now. Headed to the lease in the a.m.! Why don't you run out here and do it for me in the a.m. ?

What are the chances they'll hit me? Is it a guarantee that they'll wipe me out too, since so many others are getting hit in N Texas? Or...... is there still a good (or any)chance they'll miss mine?

                      50/50.

There is really no rhyme or reason to the fields they hit and the ones they leave alone.

Chances are your food plot is already passed saving if they are on it. Might as well be prepared to replant. And if you are lucky they missed you.

We did not need any more hay but we wanted to decrease the number we might have to fight next year.

I didn't go look at mine today, except from here at the house, 150 yards away. The rain we got made them look "plush/green". I was thinking they looked GREAT!

May look down there tomorrow and see nothing but dirt!

My buddy said they were crawling all over his. I'll go take a closer look in the a.m. But... nothing I can do about it now!

I have 3 small plots. 1/2 acre of oats/peas, 1/4 acre of alfalfa, and 1/2 acre of wheat.

I hope I won't have to say "had", instead of "have".

Once the night time temperatures start to drop army worm damage will stop...if you have them spraying BT on your crop works very well....one bite and they are gone...
