    Dove hunting math

Dove is coming from right to left at 40mph, you are 40 yards away, shooting 12 gauge 8 shot, (1300 fps or so). How far do you need to lead the bird?

I was told 14 feet, if this is true it explains why I miss so much

You got me there. I shoot once, then increase my lead if I miss.

      I do know......

The average number of shells per bird increases with the BPD. (beer per day)

When the guy asked me I said about a 5 foot lead, just guessing off the top of my head. He said a guy told him 14 feet, sounds like a lot. But, then again I read that usually what people think they need to lead, to double that.

Looking forward to the answer on this. There was a thread last week talking about aiming shotguns. Turns out most folks on here shoot w/ both eyes open. I'm gonna try that along with the feedback you get here. Great question!

Care to show your math on how you got that.

I tried, it's way over my head.

Don't make it so hard, just bait a spot out and get them closer. Kidding of course.

                    40 yards * 3 ft/yd / 1300 fps = 0.0923 sec.
                    40 mph * 5280 ft/mi / 60 min/hr / 60 sec/min = 58.67 fps
                    58.67 fps * 0.0923 sec = 5.4 ft.

Of course, you've got to be awfully quick to radar the bird's speed, range the distance, and do the math in your head...probably better off taking Atfulldraw's advise, if you miss, increase your lead.
