They pretty much have a class for every kind of shooter. The most popular class is the hunter class which is 40yds max with 280FPS. Fixed pins and 12" or shorter stabilizer. This is basically a hunting setup and many people shoot this class so they can keep in tune during the offseason and have fun hanging out with different people.

the closest club to you is going to be Montgomery County Archers or Buffalo Fields. BF is a strong club and they shoot a lot of field archery and 3D. There is Banana Bend Archers - they are on the east side of Houston tho.
Sorry for the delay to your question- you can tell it's hunting season!

If you want to shoot 3d, join a club.

If you want to get serious, meet the club Prez and say you want to get involved with their board running the club- volunteer for what needs to be done.

It's the best way to jump into serious archery. I did it and have been the club secretary for 5 years.

"Interview" different potential clubs. Meet the people who run it and go to a shoot and ask the Prez to introduce you to a bunch of members. Different clubs have different personalities, some more competitive than others, some are just nicer people.

To answer the question, you can shoot and enjoy 3d with your hunting bow. My club has people shooting compounds primarily hunters, long bows, recurves and a few shooting primitive archery with Yew bows they made themselves.

Other clubs in the area are 100% compound and lots of target archers. To each their own.

Can anyone tell me some archery clubs around the Austin Area? I am really interested in traveling and trying to come competitive with this sport and was just looking for some advise. I see 3D shooting and target ring shooting what is better to get into?

Yes, there are several- The Texas Archery Guide will be out mid January, just before the 3D season starts. There will be over 20 clubs in it, and you can easily find a club near you!

Anyone know if Young county is shooting currently? I've been down there once this past year really enjoyed it....great guys and shoot. Life has allowed me more time for archery recently and I'd love to get out shooting 3D. Plans are to hit as many shoots as I can.....anyone have any suggestions nearby....I'm in Burkburnett/Wichita Falls. Thanks in advance. JT

In target shooting you shoot known, marked distances and "punch paper". In 3d you shoot unmarked distance like hunting and full size animal targets with scoring rings. As a hunter, my choice is 3d. Some clubs here make the shots easy, others like mine make the shots challenging shooting through Ys in trees, standing on the side of a hill, etc.

You don't need a target bow with a long stabilizer to have a great time shooting 3d.
