    Broad Head Sharpening

I’ve been doing this for 47 yrs. I hate sharpening broadheads.

I’ve had several people over the years tell me that they can sharpen a head “hair popping sharp” in less than five minutes. But they have never been able to prove it.

Here’s my easy and fast method that I’ve used for the last 3 years.

Get a KME. Mount your broad head. Run a Sharpie marker down the edge.

Put that sucker on a belt sander with a fine grit belt. Hold it there until the Sharpie mark is gone.

    Finish on crock sticks.

And this also works great on shot and slightly damaged edges.

After LOTS of broad heads I had to replace the part of the KME that touches the belt. $17 if I remember correctly.

    This is fast.

This is the most foolproof I've found. I like VPA's anyways and this makes it easy. Plus the components are listed under "more"

That is a lot of work on one head. Effective. But time consuming. I have a method and tool I use. And it packs a bit easier for trips. I may use this at home though.

I can sharpen a head shaving sharp in less than 60 seconds. However I cheat and use a buffing wheel on a bench grinder. I’ve always disliked sharpening broadheads…..

Tough to pack one in your luggage on a destination hunt though.

If a guy is prepared, and takes a sufficient number of heads with him, he shouldn’t ever need to sharpen anything while on a destination hunt!!!!

Not all of us have a lifetime supply of GKs to run around with bud. But that said heads dull in quivers, in foam boxes, etc. I touch my heads up all the time. Plus, if I make a kill with an arrow and head that combo gets cleaned and sharpened and used on the next hunt and the next hunt and the next hunt . . .
Whether it's in Abilene at the ranch or Missouri or Africa.
You've seen me do it at LOR as well. Just how I roll.

That’s fine!!!! Different strokes for different folks. I know you have a plenty good supply of broadheads. They may not be GK’s, but they are still broadheads. If you take enough on a trip with you, there should be little to no reason to “have to” sharpen heads while on any particular hunt. That’s how I roll! Not one way right or wrong, just different ways of doing the same thing.

And btw, there are a lot of folks who are not good at, and hate sharpening broadheads (me included). And using a RADA is not adequate sharp for hunting!!!!!

I use a Benchmade pull through diamond knife sharpener for broadheads, and it does a pretty good job.

what is the best system to sharpen a double bevel like a Magnus Stinger?

I can sharpen a 3 blade no issues and can sharpen a single bevel no issues but haven't found a good way to sharpen a double bevel

My Iron Wills don't dull in the quiver... and if a guy is good with DMT diamond stones, they can make an Iron Will sharp enough to circumcise a gnat in a couple minutes. Helps when the heads come truly sharp from the manufacturer though .

I personally like 4 blades and 2 blades because I can get them sharper. I use DMT diamond stones, and mostly I free hand sharpen. But I will occasionally reset a bevel by putting the broadhead in a lansky knife sharpening jig. Once a good bevel is set at home, in the field touchups are a piece of cake *if* you have a steady hand and don't overpressure the stone.

It took a lot of years of practice, but the biggest key to making an edge sharp is understanding edge geometry and the steps of refining that edge to a finely honed apex without a burr. Then practicing till you know what all the steps in the process feel like. Most guys put way too much pressure into their sharpening. Get good stones and let them do their job!
