When you twist the string up, it will lenghten your brace height which will affect how your bow will perform. Normally a lower brace will shoot faster and pull a little easier. A longer brace will pull a little harder and shoot somewhat slower but it will normally give better flight. You have to play around with this till you find your bows sweet spot. This adjustment along with nock point adjustments are about the only tuning required for your bow other than your arrow selections.
You take one end off and twist the string to shorten it. As Muddy dog said, every bow has a sweet spot in the fistmele[brace height]. Usually a bow will shoot it's quietest in the sweet spot and will have the least recoil.
Also you can have two seemingly identical bows and each will have it's own sweet spot that may be different from the other. It's important that you find the sweet spot so your bow will perform it's best. These sticks are fun, ain't they?
