Help a newbie get started please

My son bought this bow Friday night. He says it’s a R2 model. Neither one of us know anything about traditional archery. It has a plastic tab for an arrow rest. What else does he need for his bow? I know about finger tabs. Does it need a better arrow rest? Sights? A peep sight? I want him to be successful, so tell me what to do. He has 6 arrows with real feathers cut to fit already.

Yall need to check out Clay Hayes' videos on YT. They really helped me when I first started. Helps to develop good form from the very start. Then just a lot of practice. Good Luck! It's a blast!

A great place to start is by reading the stickies at the top of the forum. Here and on other websites. A good textbook for learning archery is "Shooting the Stickbow" by Anthony Camera. It is the most comprehensive book that I have seen on the subject. He hangs out on ArcheryTalk.com using the handle Viper. The book is well worth the money.

There simply is too much for you to learn for us to do it in a conversational format. The guys on here are great at helping but no one wants to type all that information every time a newbie comes along. As you read about the basics, ask questions for clarification. We will be glad to help. If you can, join a club or find a coach. One on one instruction is far better than textbook instruction. Welcome to the sport! Be forewarned, it is addicting.

I’ve been reading up on the sticky’s. Still would like a recommendation for an arrow rest. Thanks for the book recommendation also.

Are you shooting off the shelf or an elevated rest?

It came with a plastic, self sticking tap just above the self.

The rest you have will be fine. You can always change it later if you want something different.

I would just recommend a Bear Weather rest, which is probably very similar to what you have.

I've been a big proponent of the Solid Archery Mechanics course by Tom Clum. But everything these guys have mentioned from the stickies, to Viper's book are gonna be solid info.

The biggest thing with a stickbow in my opinion, is to get good coaching from the start. A month with a coach, or a couple hundred dollars for online teaching modules will save you literal years of frustration. I did not have any coaching to start out, and 6 years ago I realized my shooting was so bad I needed to tear everything down, and start from scratch. It took me another 2 years of stubbornness before I finally found Joel Turner's youtube content, and then 3 more years to stumble across Tom Clum's teaching modules, and The Push podcast. This last season I finally felt competent with a stick bow. That's 6 years of doing things the hard way, and feeling frustrated most of the time by my shooting!

AntlerCollector where does your son live? If he's close I would be happy to get him going. Judging by where you hunt I'm guessing y'all aren't to far. Looking at the set-up the rest is likely fine to get started with.

TexanDuke I see you're right down the road, well in Texas that is. If you're serious I can help you get going.

He lives in Votaw, TX. Thanks everyone for the advice. I’m tempted to get one myself, but I’m worried it may mess up my form when using the compound bow.

Good form is good form, whether with a compound or a trad bow! It should carry over from one to the other.

If you master good form with a Trad bow with zero let off, it will likely improve your firm with the wheel bow with 65-80% let off!!!!
