Do you guys mostly shoot off the shelf or do you use a rest? I was gonna buy one of those carpet style ones and thought maybe I ought to get your opinions. I appreciate the input.

My preference is Velcro on the shelf and side plate.

Just about everybody shooting "trad" shoot feathers off the shelf. (Vs feathers or vanes off an elevated rest)
3D is one very good reason... simplicity is another... not all bows have cutouts that can take a flipper, etc, so folks don't bother starting out with one...
I have done calf hair, velcro, and bear hair/plate... they all work great.

If you are talking about the rug rest, then it isn't a rest at all.
It is simple a shelf covering just like leather, velcro, or anything else you use to cover the shelf & strike plate with to shoot "from the shelf" with. It isn't an elevated rest.
I know quite a number of folks who don't put anything on the shelf & strike plate, and shoot directly off the bare wood. It works just fine.
The only reasons I use a covering of some kind are: (1) It protects the bow from wear from arrow friction, and (2) It makes the bow quieter on both the draw cycle, and the shot.

I shoot my longbows off the shelf with fuzzy velcro. About 6-7 years ago I tried a feather rest on my recurve and I really liked it so I left in on. I was surprised at how durable they are - I've only replaced it twice over that time. They are not real popular for some reason - I've never seen anyone else using one

Rest?
I really like the feather rest on my Bear ‘59. Other than that I’ve only used different coverings such as leather, calf hair, or Velcro. I want to say it was Big Jim that told me Velcro isn’t the best to use for a strike plate due to it wearing thinner and thinner over time.
