    Chocolate lab vs black lab

What is everyone's opinion on chocolate labs vs black labs. I have heard from different people that black labs are better when it comes to hunting/retrieving and easier to train.

Is it a traditional lab? I think you posted in the wrong thread friend. Probably have better luck around the campfire

I prefer a yellow lab for dove hunting. It is so hot that time of year I always thought the lighter skin color could help them stay cool. Yellow is all that I have ever hunted with.

I have also heard that but I went with a chocolate just because well I have always wanted one and I am willing to prove that myth wrong. She's the best hunting dog and birdiest dog I have owned by a long shot.

I can honestly say, in 40 yrs of duck hunting with numerous labs, the only good ones I have shot birds over have been black and yellow. Could just be coincidence, but I have hunted over and owned a lot of duck dogs over the years.

I always heard that chocolates have skin issues. Not sure what all that entails but I too have hunted with all colors and I have been around some dang good chocolates. But I prefer yellow and black. My black dog used to get real hot when dove hunting. See my pictures in the dove hunting thread about heat.

Ive owned all 3 colors and they have all done great at the hunt test and in the field , its not the color its the hunt in the dog.

I think the myth originated in truth, but its far from the truth now. In the early days of field trials, blacks and yellows are all anyone ran. they have decades longer of selective breeding over chocolates. and because of that when people really started to show interest in running choc's they werent all well mannered or driven as the other two colors. with that being said, times have changed. Choc's have certainly caught up in their breeding and it really comes down to training. the hunt test are becoming dominated with female chocs from what ive been seeing. at the end of the day, for the most part youll get what you pay for. if you want a true top of the line pup, check out gator point kennels. their chocs are famous across the country. with that being said, my best friend got his choc male pup the day after i got my pup. my comes from a long line of master hunters, his has no name at all. his pup is exactly 1 day older than mine, except his at the age of 3 months looks like a 1 year old thats been in training its whole life while mine is just now showing interest in bringing stuff back to me. sometimes its the luck of the draw.

                      Pedigree>Color

I dont think the color has anything to do with it. 2 FTCH male and female may throw yellow or black, but to say one would be better than the other based off of color is crazy. Just say not to "SILVER LABS".

I had a chocolate lab that was a great hunter, you can breed 2 yellow labs and get all 3 colors, its blood line. My chocolate lab Bo was a hunters dream he was a decent pointer too. I was young when i had him he could hunt anything and was ok tracking deer. I bought another chocolate lab and he was junk he was a car chaser and he was killed. So it depends on the blood line not the color. A good lab will cost you. If you want a high energy dog and your wife will like look into french brittany pointer. They are half the size of a lab.

I have two 5 month old pups now. Blk female and choc male, both from very good pedigrees with the female's being slightly better. The female is just as hyper as they come and a retrieving machine. Since she was 10 weeks, she would bring bumper right back to my hand. Her sire is Texas Troubador "Tubb". The male, not so much. Very calm, but he's a work in progress. He has a lot of gator point kennel dogs and also Barracuda Blue. His sire is Man on the stand "Maestro".
