    recurve string selection

While looking at some 50# replacement limbs for my sage, i got to thinking about the string. Can i use the same string that i use on my 45# limbs if they are the same length? Or should i get a new one for the extra poundage and let it settle in to tune for that specific setup?

Same string as long as the limbs give you the same length bow.

If the limbs are the same length then the string will work.

        Thanks,
I have not dove into the specifics about how to choose a string yet. I know there are several different selections/styles/material to choose from. I doubted 5 lbs would make a difference though

Order a Fast Flyght type of material. A BCY-X or Brownell Flury type. That's a 62" now so you will need a 58" string. That one on it was 58.5" and that is why it has such a tight twist to it. I still have those 50# Journey limbs which will fit that bow but you would need a 60" string to use those.

I thought about those as well. Would the difference in length change the brace height much? Specs for the current limbs show 7.5 to 8.5" for optimum brace height.

              To answer some questions.

When going from sage limbs to sage limbs (just upping the poundage) you can just use the same string. The limbs bring the length to 62" and you use a 58" string. The only time you really need to worry about changing strings in a situation like that (length same, weight increase) is if you had a custom string with a small number of strands.

You adjust the brace height by twisting up the string. You want to have the string initially be in the ball park and then you can twist up or down to get to the brace height you/your bow likes. A string itself has an optimal range of twists per inch... and that is why you start off with the ballpark string length for a bow.

You have to shoot in a new string, so you will get lots of practice measuring your BH and twisting up the string until it settles in.

For the sage, you can use a fast flight material if you go to a new string. It is probably best to do that before you start tuning your arrows because the string performance has an impact on your tune. Always buy 2 strings at a time so you have a backup. Strings are fairly cheap in the grand scheme of things, so it is no big deal.

Brace height could be different. I'm sure someone here who had a journey could put you in the ball park.

                  I'm seeing a range of 7.5 to 8.5 inches.

Im not sure what number of strands on a string is considered average/high/low. But the bow did come from Gary with a custom string already on it.

When you order some strings just be aware if they list it at 62" AMO length, that's a 58" ACTUAL length string, which is what you need.

Some may list them as 62" ACTUAL length, which is what you don't need. Always check the specifics.
