    Knapping rock

Wife and I hope to be in Texas during the month of Feb for 30 days. Visiting an old Marine buddy who lives just north of San Antonio. Looking for an area to gather a couple of 5 gallon buckets of knapping rock. Maybe a farmer out there has some in his fields or a creek running around some property. Any help is appreciated.

I know it is a few months away but I like to get things lined up as I think of them.

I am respectful of others property and pick up trash I see it to help out.

I like to nap on the couch or a reclining chair in the shade.

I was on a lease in Coke county I think that had flint everywhere.

Texas is chuck full of flint/chert but it is also mostly private property as you know. Just trying to get some things lined up, thanks, Jon

Knapping Rock, like plain river rock? What part of town will you be in? There are plenty of places you can access the Guadalupe just North of San Antonio.

We will be in an RV Park at 281 and 46. Not much public access to the Guadalupe. I went to the state park but was told I could not pick up rocks.

There are several places that farm to market roads cross the Guadalupe. One crossing is between the State Park and hwy 281 You go west on Spring Branch Rd. it's off 281 in Spring Branch between 46 and 306, and it's called Nichols landing.
It has a ton of river rock and is public access to kayakers or people fly fishing.
I guarantee you that you picking up a few rocks nobody will even notice. There is a parking area there and you don't need to ask if you are just looking for a few rocks. There is nobody there that you have to check in or anything it being public access.

North up 281, take a right on Highway 311, head down about 2 miles. You'll come up to the river crossing. You can park on either side of the road (I believe there are signs telling where NOT) to park. You can walk directly down to the river. Plenty of rocks there, although I can't speak to the legality of removing them from the river. I never heard anything saying you couldn't. I'd check to make sure, if it is a concern.

And like Jimbo47 said. Nichols Landing is another good place.

Sent you a PM. My deer lease has three or four different quality cherts on it and I have a couple hundred pounds of low to medium quality stuff in my yard. Just found this spot of chert this week. About 70/30 chert/ limestone. Egg to large Grapefruit sizes, real glassy but lots of cracks.
