    Lucky buck!

Just had this buck at 8 yards. Been waiting to get one close to 12 yards to improve my odds after the recent disappointments. He walked straight in facing me, stayed for 20 minutes, then spun and walked straight away. No shot. What are the odds?https://vimeo.com/188292713

That happened to me once on a big buck I was hunting. I was using corn piles then. I changed my strategy and made a heavy corn line in a shallow "V" shape perpendicular to my shooting lane. I have never had a target deer not give me the shot I wanted since. Good luck in your next encounter.

He knew you were there, just couldn't pinpoint where. More smart than lucky!

At 8 yards he could probably hear my heart beat.

happened to me on a buck i called "Brutus", except 20 yards

he came under the one branch i had covering me (deer came usually right to left), straight on.

I cut the branch later. Still kicking myself. Wasnt comfortable shooting to 40 yards at the time (beyond branch)

I had a doe opening weekend do just that. She never turned. She suspected I was in there. She was so jumpy though that even if she turned broadside, I am pretty sure it would have been an ill advised shot. She never flicked her tail. Finally her anxiety got the best of her and she turn and sprinted off.

It stings when you are that close...

I had a really nice buck, big 10 pt with forked G-2 on one side, on opening morning 3 years back that came in feeding on acorns to 15 yards and never got past a hard quartering too angle, then left. 5 minutes later, he came back same thing, hard quartering to me all the way into 12yards. Out of no where, a hawk came barreling thru the timber at low altitude right amongst the wad of deer below me and he blew out again!
Another 5 minutes passed and the buck comes back for the THIRD TIME. This time, he was mine! I had him hanging on the wall and the backstraps on the grill! As he slowly started to turn to give me the perfect broadside shot, a feeder set up behind me a ways in the same woodlot went off and all the deer scattered again and I didn't get a single picture of that buck or see him on the hoof again until the next September!! Saying I was mad was an understatement!
Soon as I gained my composure back, I heard something behind me and turned to see a line of 5 bucks heading my way starting with a spike and growing as the line progressed to the last buck, a 21+" wide 8 pt. As soon as he turned broadside, my arrow was in flight and sticking out of his side at 23 yards. I was dead set on not shooting past 20 yards, but after the 10 gave me fits and left my life, I wasn't about to give the big 8 the chance!

As frustrating as it is when they don't cooperate, sometimes something better is just around the corner!
