    Brace height question

So my questions is this, for you guys that unstring your bow after every session or to travel how do you keep the right twist in your strings so your brace height doesn't change ?
Do you remeasure after you string it every time ?
I'm a little on the **** side when it comes to details like that and I struggle to say close is close enough. I have an arrow marked but it's a PIA to recheck it all the time

Excellent question. I let my string just slide down onto the bow and not completely off of it so it doesn't have a chance to untwist. I dunno if that's right though.

I carry a bow square everywhere I go. I don't check every time, but I check it often. If my shooting seems messed up, brace height is the first thing I check.

I doubt you are more **** about it than I am. We were at a 3D shoot one time. I pulled out my square and noticed my BH was just a tad off. I unstrung my longbow and put a half twist in the string and strung it back up. The guy standing next to me looked at me like I ws crazy and sais something like "Really! A half a twist?".

All I know is that I know what is right, and if it is not right, I am going to make it right.

I just got a new gizmo in the mail today made by Driter Traditional Archery called a Stretch Checker. You set it for your BH and it is way more compact than a square. I have not tried it yet, but it looks like it may just come in real handy!

It may not untwist, but it can (and probably will) settle some from time to time.

I appreciate the response. I'm going to have to pull out my old square and start thinking again.

I slide it down the limb and use a string keeper. I also have a short section of shaft with a nock that I can check brace height with.

I unstring my recurve ever time. I hold the two end loops together with one of my daughters hair pins, then fold it and put it in the bow case. It works

Use a tip protector and your string will never slide off your bow.

Mark an arrow or arrows where your BH should be. Some folks crest their arrows with precise marks for BH.

When your string is removed loop the ends together in order to prevent in-twisting.

Nice tool! Looks like something we can make with a broken arrow. Just cut the piece short, install an insert and buy an 8/32 threaded nylon nut from hime depot with a rubber stop washer.
I could use that myself because I do the same thing - I frequently check my BH

If I have to take the string off for any reason I insert one loop into the others and pull the other through the first loop to keep it from Un twisting. I will recheck my brace height from time to time if I get an arrow that acts a little funny.
Usually just something in my form tho.
Bisch is right about the string settling. I've noticed that more than anything else.

Is settling the same as stretch?

Yes, but most of the new low stretch string material don't really stretch much at all. The "stretch" with these strings is actually just the strands coming together under twist and tension.

                        Dacron stretches a ton!!!!

Thanks for he help, i like that tool Bisch, think I'll order one.
One more question, how many cycles of draw does a modern bow string take before it " settles " ?

I have an old bow with a D50 string for now. There is a Widow in my future though.

I have bought string the maker claims are "pre-stretched" but even with those I have found they often get longer until you've shot 100 arrows or so.
