    beginner needing advice

I have been thinking about going traditional for a long time. I have always had the urge to start traditional by building my own bow. I have always liked the looks of solid wood long bows. How hard is it and could a beginner make one with a good manual to guide him? re there places on the internet to buy long bow blanks or staves and manuals with good step by step instruction and pictures? I am one of those people who likes to start at the ground up and learn how it works from there very beginning. Is this a crazy idea? Should I just start with a production line 45# bow and go from there?

Thanks for you advice in adance

I know you can buy bow blanks and instructional videos. Try 3 Rivers Archery Products and see what they have. As far as weight goes, if you are new to trad shooting, be sure to start with low draw weight, i.e. 45# or so. Developing good form and release are VERY important to ever being able to shoot well.

    Good luck,

tradgang has an excellent build along how to section.

Why not find an Osage (Bois D' Arc) tree with a reasonably straight limb and make your own stave.

I have heard that a good blank needs to dry for a year or two before making into a bow. is this true or not? I know of a Osage orange tree near by but not sure if it is large enough or straight enough but will check.

Tradtional Bowyers Bibles are a good start too. I might suggest with your first one try building a red oak board bow, even if it doesnt work out , you're not out a lot of money and you learn a lot.
Theres lots of build alongs on the net

I think they've covered it pretty good. If you look hard enough you can find some osage fence posts. Some of the older barns and sheds were made from osage as well, but harder to find than the fence postes. They're ready to go, just takes a LOT of shaving and sweat. Over on tradgang there's a bow horse build along. This little work bench will help a lot if you're wanting to make a selfbow. I built one myself. Or contact John Scifres over there. I'd give you a link, but they've sent me to banned camp.

primitivearcher and paleoplanet are websites that have bow building forums that you might look into also.

http://pinehollowlongbows.com/ is a great place to get staves... I would go to http://rudderbows.com and look there first.. Get one of their blanks or do it yourself kits. They have hickory and you can make a very nice shooting bow out of hickory... it is a lot cheaper than buying an Osage stave as well. A good Osage stave can run as high as 100.00. The hickory kits are all board units and are great for getting your feet wet. Good luck - I make a lot of selfbows but lately I have gotten in to laminated wood bows. Have 4 on the go right now.
