I already have a recurve and a broken long bow. I quit shooting trad bows, because my longbow broke. I wouldn't say that Tinman recruited me; he only added some fuel to a small flame to get it burning brighter.

Now as for my broken longbow! I spent a month building it. It was a hickory backed osage long bow.

Well I had someone break into my house in the middle of the night last summer. The closest thing I had for a weapon when this cracked out idiot came into my bedroom with a knife was my unstrung longbow. Well being a bit crazy I decided to hell with him and I swung that bow as hard as I could. Hit him in the side of the head; the limb on my bow broke in half. He was knocked out cold and bled on my floor alot. According to the cops he spent a week in the hospital because of the whack to the skull. So now I have a longbow that protected my family in a very unusual way.

So here is to giving trad shooting another go. Been wanting to go back anyways.

....but I do not go out and recruit trad shooters.
It wasn't really my intention to recruit anyone as much as give us all a forum to present advice specifically for bowhunters who currently shoot compounds and are interested in trying traditional gear.

I know I would probably still be shooting a compound and wondering why I can't hit a thing with this old longbow if I hadn't gotten some help from Elvis Jennings, just trying to pass it on.

          Recurve Specs???

I want to change to traditional (recurve) from compound. What length and weight of bow does a newbie need to start with? Does bow length matter? How do you measure draw length for a recurve? I have been bowhunting for 19 years and have shooting 65 lbs. on my compound. Are there any different rules that apply to traditional bow weights for hunting vs. compounds? I would like to get a bow that I can learn with as well as hunt with.

Brush buster , I would start with around 50-55#s & your draw length will be a little shorter also. Don't start with a expensive custom bow , just get any recurve & get out there . Alot of practice will tell you if this is something for you , then if you want you can upgrade. Just remember start close to the target until you get your form down. 10 yards is all you need to start.

              Recurve Specs???

What about bow length. I have read that longer bows are more forgiving but less manuverable? A friend of mine has a Martin recurve 55lbs @ 29" that he said I could have if I wanted it. He said he just never could or would use it. 29" is my draw length on a compound. How would this compare?

The longer the bow,the smoother it stacks(usually) and to a point is more fogiving.I would take that guy up on that bow offer, what do you have to lose?
Your draw length might drop some, but does'nt matter one way or another with a trad bow.

Bruch buster, If I understand you correctly you are asking about a 29" draw length at 55#. In traditional bows that is just what #age they are at that draw length. If you are a 30" draw with the same bow you will increase 2-3#@30". or lose 2-3# at 28". Trad bow use these measurement as a referance to # and draw weight. Me personally I like a 62-64" bow lenght at my 30 draw, others might like a 58" at the same 30" draw. I hope I did not confuse you.

Why don’t we start several different threads with different topics that we can use to discuss (not debate) and inform new shooters about traditional archery? Then when someone has a question we can point them to the thread that pertains to their question and they will not have to wade through a mass of posts to get their answer.

                    Some ideas for topics:

                    Three under vs. split finger.
Canting vs. straight up and down
What bow length is recommended for your draw length?
What is a good starter bow and where to find it?
Who/where do I go for help?
                    Point on vs. instinctive.

The idea sounds good in theory, I guess I will get it started to see if it works. Please feel free to jump in and start one of the above topics or add one I haven’t thought of.

It is so much about what works for an individual. I shoot 3 under, anchor with the index finger, never look at the arrow, cant my bow and shoot instinctive.

What was it that Fred Bear said??? When you the animal while gun hunting the hunt is over. When you see the animal with a bow the hunt begins.
