But back in the 30's to the 70's it was not uncommon for folk to shoot and hunt at 70 to 80 yards, there was no 3d and no internet. N.F.A.A. & N.F.A. was out to 80 yards and men practiced and shot the distance all the time... when i was a young man our targets were out to 60 yards. i was 14 in 1969 and you never heard """wow them targets were streched""" it was the norm. and it was fun to watch the arrows fly...
read the books by Mr. howard Hill and Mr. pope Mr. young, the Thompson brothers, Mr. bear and many more, they did what most folks today would call unethical , they were good shot's, great sportsman, and the true hero's of ARCHERY..
    Hey Yank. How ya doing?

This was the mentality when I started hunting with a bow. My first whitetail bow kill was 45 yards. (45# Recurve) I still enjoy shooting judos at long distances.

I once won $10 while rabbit hunting on a new friends property. He bet me I couldn't hit his rifle target at 100 yards. The target was 4' X 4' and I hit it twice in a row. We did a lot of long distance playing and yes I believe it helps with close shots.

I used to love watching the old hunting videos where Barry Winchell would shoot a balloon out of a tire rolling down a hill at 40 yards. Guy had talent with a stick and string. I'm sure there are better out there, but that takes me back to my youth.

Last week in Africa 10 yds evidently was too far.

I prefer 10-15 in hunting situations but shoot much farther during practice. If you become proficient at 25-30 in practice, a 15 yard hunting shot seems easy.

Looking at a golf ball sized dot on a hay bale at 50+ yards and shooting at it for a while looks like a basketball when you close in to 20yards or less! Plus it really makes you concentrate on form and release. What might cause a 1/2" miss at 20yards may be more like 2 feet at 50yards

On critters, all just depends on animal and situation, but prefer 25 and in.
Same here. I have passed on 15ish yard shot because the critter didn't look killable, but I have taken 30ish yard shots without a 2nd thought.

Also, squirrels and stumps are in trouble when they are WAY off.

Since I have only one trad kill, it was at 15ish yards. I don't intend on trying a hunting situation much beyond that. However, I would LOVE to be able to hit something the size of a pie plate at 60+. Watched a Fred Bear video and it states that he needed to get within 50 yards to make a clean shot kill shot. (African Hunt), and he was proficient at it. Like stated above, I'll shoot at almost anything on target, but in hunting it's gotta be close.
