    Over the counter Elk

Well this year i didnt get drawn for anything in NM and it has been several years since i have hunted Colorado Elk. I have hunted elk several times in the dolores/durango area and seen several elk but no shots.
Probably going back to that same general area.... Unless anyone has other recommendations for areas i might try.

I just came back from a scouting trip in that area of Colorado. I say go back there, Plenty of elk sign!

Around Leon Lake and Peak. Lots of elk, camp between two lakes, and from 9500 to 1050 ft.

I lived in Meeker, CO for 2 years. Elk everywhere, also alot of hunters though. You can get away from everyone if you dont mind hiking.

Spent two weeks last year Hunting the La Garita Wilderness saw A good Bull but just out of range for the recurve. Black powder Guys killed a Dandy Bull and Cow. my partner Killed a Cow with his Recurve and one of our party missed a herd Bull two or three times with a Compound Bow. Go figure They are planning to meet up again this year look for a thread on Leatherwall called DIY Elk 2015. I'm going back next year for two weeks.
