IBEP, Hagerman proficiency using a traditional bow

My BIL wants to get certified using a recurve.

i know nothing about the proficiency tests for IBEP or for the Hag deer hunt.

Can someone give me a few details. distances, etc...

    same for compound and trad?

    thanks

XBowHunter, I am an IBEP instructor in the Dallas area, and can comment on your questions.....Short answers are, yes you can do IBEP and a Hagerman Proficiency test using a recurve.

For the IBEP class, there is a shooting exercise but it's not really a proficiency test. The only requirement is for the instructor to observe the student shoot a bow. So using a recurve is no big deal for this, and I have had a number of students do so.

To hunt at Hagerman, once you are drawn you must pass a Proficiency Test that Hagerman defines. It consists of shooting 14 deer-sized 3-D targets, with a maximum range of 30 yards. Scoring is on a 10-8-5-0 basis, and to pass you must score 80% of possible points, or a total of 112. The Hagerman guidelines make no mention of type of bow used.

I have run a number of Hagerman Proficiency shoots (typically called Hagerman Qualifiers) over the years thru Texans Archery Club. Recognizing that trad shooters are not typically going to shoot out to 30 yards, I set separate stakes for compound and trad shooters. This fits within the Hagerman guidelines, and each style of shooter can therefore qualify by taking shots they might typically take in a real hunting situation. Thus trad shooter's shots aren't too long, and compound shooter's shots aren't too short and easy.

I would suggest any trad shooter ask about such details when they choose a Hagerman Proficiency/Qualifier shoot...

XBOW and RGB, I had this conversation with the Hagerman staff last year, the guidance from Mr. Cantu was a 20 yard maximum distance for traditional archers.

RGBs practice probably fits into the above guidance.

And was told have to have to hunt at refuge in Tishamingo Ok. Figure I might as well get it and be done so would not have any worries if drawn and looking to draw the hog hunts at Hagerman also,

Here's the link to the IBEP schedule posted on TPWD's website. Looks like there is not anything scheduled north of the DFW area this year....
