    Bow length vs Draw length

I am slowly being drawn to the dark side and am considering purchasing my first traditional bow. I am looking at the Samick bow, but had a question for you trad guys. I have a 30.5" draw length but I am unsure how to determine if a recurve is safe for that since they are all rated at 28" that I have seen. Are recurves ok to be drawn to my length without breaking and hitting me in the head? Thanks!

The rule i know is ...twice your draw =minimum bow length...uness its osage..then slightly shorter..lol...no really.

When you say 30.5" - is that your compound draw length? You may already know this, but your draw length with a trad bow is likely going to be somewhat shorter.....

The 30.5" is my draw length on my compound, but I didn't know about the difference between the compound and the trad bow. So I guess I will have to find out my draw length for a trad bow somehow. Thanks!

It can vary from person to person but it's usually 1"-2" shorter. The best method I have found for measuring your draw length is take a full length arrow and put the nock center of you chest and extend your arms out down the shaft in front of you and mark or have someone mark where your finger tip extends the furthest on the arrow. Should be pretty close to your draw length. Don't know if this will make sense or not typing it out...

I will try this too. I have heard about using a clothes pin on an arrow also, but since I don't have a trad bow yet, I can't try this one out. But it sounds like I should be ok with a recurve, if my draw length would be shorter than for my compound

What Chris said. Most people will lose 1 - 2" when going from a compound to a trad bow. Keep in mind that a trad bow will gain 2 - 4 lbs in draw weight for each inch increase in draw length.

Stock Bows are marked for weight at 28" as per AMO specs.

They can be drawn further. Longer draw lengths are more comfortable with longer bows due to finger pinch.

Some bowyers will tell you that a certain bow length will perform better with a certain draw length.

Ok. Thanks everyone for the info! I appreciate the help and I am sure that I will have many more questions once my bow gets here!

I would recommend you get a 62" recurve! you could go shorter or longer but thats a pretty good length for where your draw will probably end up when you get comfortable shooting.

I am with ShaBow on this one. With a longer draw length, I would go no shorter than 62", and probably go with a 64".

I have been looking at the samich sage, which is 62", primarily due to the price, and reading on TBH. but is there any others that I should be looking at in the same price range (I.e. Cheap)?

The Sage is about as good as there is in that price range. Stay with lower poundage, not more than about 45, so you can learn good form. Once you have the form down a bit, then you can increase your poundage to whatever you are comfortable with.

You really need to find out what your draw length is. If it is more than 28", the whatever bow you get will be mare than it is marked at 28" for you.

I just had the wife help measure my draw length using the previously mentioned arrow shaft method, which we aren't very scientific, but we came up with 29.25 once and 29.50 the second time, so it is probably around 29.375" or so I am guessing. Which is about 1.50" less than for my compound
