Rattling and Grunting from a tree stand

I've got a few days left on my public hunt near Fort Worth. I've found a spot, small clearing, with lots of activity. Two questions...first my tree stand is approx. 18 ft high, should I rattle/grunt from this elevated position? I've seen a couple of legal bucks within my 50 yd viewing area, they stop when I grunt but after that they pay no attention (I haven't rattled yet); second... The deer move just inside the tree line, but it's about 50 yds from my stand, there's a cottonwood tree that's closer, buts it's only about 8" in diameter, not sure if it's large enough to place a tree stand (Millennium 150) or should I move my stand over where they are traveling or leave it where it is and hope for the best. I'm certain they are traveling to their bedding area and I hate to make too much ruckus with only a few days left. If I move to the small tree all the deer will be in range but I'm a little skeptical of the smaller tree. I think it will hold me ok and I would not place the stand as high. I haven't hunted from a tree stand very much, so I could use some advice. Thanks!

If you are more than 8 or so feet high with adequate cover, I would say go for it.

dump some corn or attractant out to get them within range!

I would move if the wind direction will allow it.

I have rattled in tons of deer while elevated. Just watch how they react and do not over do it.

Most of the time in my experience, cottonwood trees don't always offer the best of cover...

Public land can be tough, bunch of people rattling, grunting, spraying scent... but I've seen it work. If wind/cover is good, I'd probably move that stand.

I don't think I'd put a stand up in that cottonwood, wouldn't take much wind to make it to windy to shoot out of. If there's no better trees to get in i'd probably throw together a little brush blind about 20-30 yards off the trail. I've rattled in a few smaller bucks on public land but even they were smart enough to circle down wind and bust me before coming in range.

I say give it a try, it really can't hurt...

I would move my stand if I thought there was a good enough place. I have not had a lot of luck with rattling, but have talked to several folks who have. Don;t know about that one?

                      Good luck Brian!

Same here as far as experience goes, but if they have a certain trail they are traveling, id try to get within shooting range to it.

Get on the ground! Your tree stand is holding you back. Find a suitable spot to hide behind and fix yourself a brush blind or camo up and sit behind a bush with a bigger bush behind you.
