    Adding weight to carbons

I just started messing with these carbons, and full length with insert, feathers, and 125 field tip =400 grains. That is way too light for my new Sarrels 58@29'' longbow.I had an Idea of adding weedeater string inside of the carbons, two full length pieces add 100 grains to overall weight.Has anybody tried this before?Any other ideas with out buying alot of extra stuff,to add weight?

You can buy fairly inexpensive "weight tubes" from Carbon Express. BassPro carries them. They come in 2 or 3 grain per inch weights. I've got a set in some VaporWoods and they work great. Along with 190 grain Simmons Interceptor tips, my total arrow weight with 31" shafts is 625 grains. That ought to get you there!

Tejas, are they in the arrow loose?I mean are they rattling around in there.

Mine don't rattle. They slip in fairly tight. Depends on the inside diameter of the arrow you're using of course. I also cut them to fit perfectly between the insert and the nock which helped I'm sure too.

Buff uses the weedeater line, I have used the weight tubes and they worked okay...they did pop off nochs when I hit something hard.

I am adding brass weights to the back of the inserts on the carbon express arrows I am shooting now. I am right at 600 grains.

I use wooden dowls !/4 inch I believe had to sand them down some but a tight fit and if you measure right you have a way to turn on the lighted nocks with trill lights....kill two birds with one stone.....Andy

Just get some heavy carbons, the Beman Max4s are heavy and so are the Easton fullmetal Jackets

Mine just have a poly rope and a metal fastener finish weight is 550 after a 145 grain tip. You use the metal fastener for weight and to attach a string to pull it down through the shaft, atleast this is what Dan Toelke told me, I have yet to try it, I just buy them already done. He also told me to pour shotgun buffering powder in the shaft. He makes his shafts around 650 or more this way. And he shoots a Whip that is 56@29 I believe, don't quote me. I thought of doing this, be easy enough to do I would think.

Hadn't thought about adding the speed earlier. My 625 grain arrows out of the Chaparral Kaibab, 51#@29" are doing 164 fps. They bury nicely in the target I use. I use matching Simmons 190 grain field tips for practice. Ace Archery also sells heavy field tips.

By putting wooden dowls inside I think it brought mine up to 600 grains with a WW for the broadhead......I have soaked a few dowls in Watco Danish Oil by useing a pvc pipe sealed with cap at one end and threaded plug at other end....This helped add weight to dowl......Andy

Wouldn't wooden dowls also make the arrows stiffer and change the spine of the arrow? I have heard of using weed eater line before.

The carbons I got are Academy specials(game winner)they are cheap 35.00 dozen,Bob Sarrels told me they work fine for targets, but will break a little easier when hitting rocks,limbs,etc..What I have seen so far is they shoot great, just too light.I am going into SA later to day will find a archery shop, and get the 100gr. inserts.

The game winner carbons, won't accept any standard carbon hardware. Really it is no secret right now I shoot Easton Axis 340 at 29" with 250gr BH and filed points the come out to 570gr. I use to shoot the Beman Max4 with the same above setup they came out around 620gr. You could add the brass insert and get more weight but I have found putting rope and stuff inside the arrow will make it wobble. Since I have been shooting the skinny carbons the are heavy enuff and come out to around 10.5gr/# and fly like darts. I hear the Alaska Bowhuntin makes some heavy carbons the Grizzly Stiks (have not shot them) but have shot the Arrow Dynamic TradLites and they fly excellent out of my Bruin Deflex Express. I put the cord and different stuff in them to get a heavier arrow and they did nothing but wobble. They only thing I did not tlike about the tradlites is the nocks were loose and arrow components are hard to get. They need to think about componet availability before I buy anymore arrows from them. But they fly really nice with little tunning. But the skinny carbons got my vote for component availabilty performance and heavy weight. Anyone looking for a heavy arrow the Beman Max4 and I believe the classic MFX are the same arrow as the Max4 except with a woodgrain finish. Try the skinny carbons you will not be dissappointed.
