I would like to remove the rest, add some moleskin and shoot off the shelf if possible (unless this is a bad idea)

A new string goes without saying. It has been hanging on a peg at my buddy's house for years

It will actually pull 43 to 45 lbs @ 28" and will be faster than a comparable bow by any other MFG. Love my old Damon Howatts.

Damon Howatt designed some of the best recurves out there. It should shoot great off the shelf, it looks like there is ample radius on the shelf.
