My personal thought is that you shouldn't try to build a bow around a string. Make sure you're leaving yourself enough length to make the process easier. Although I think you're in the right ballpark.... I can't really remember what mine were at, length wise. For some reason I want to say my first ones were closer to 70". Best I can say is listen to Sam's advice on length.
3 rivers archery has/had an adjustable string that was pretty cheap that I bought to use as a tillering string. I think I still used paracord for long string tillering, then just to the adjustable string for short string tillering. I would put some duct tape around the center area to protect it from the screws I used for my stop marks on the tiller tree. When I was done, I'd shorten the string more and use it to shoot a few until I got a final string made.
