    serving material

I am just starting to build my own strings...and wondering what serving material r yall using? Have u found something that works better than others and that is tougher than others? Is there something that for a guy like me when I get the time I shoot quit a bit that will last longer I have a problem with the serving getting worn out where I knock my arrow..just curious if anybody had some opinions on this stuff what they have fnd to be best

Also I am wondering about serving size...I like for my wood arrows to fit pretty tight on the serving

Caleb, I use Halo .026 on 16 strands of 8190. This is the recipe for my wood arrows, and it seems to last forever.

I use Brownell's Diamondback. It is a combination of polyester and HMPE (used to make the low stretch strings). The polyester helps it stay in place, and it is super tough because of the HMPE. I think I am using .021 with a 14 strand B50 string.

If I'm not mistaken the D97 is larger diameter than the BCY 8190. I am no pro, a friend gave me a pile of BCY 8190 and some good coaching.

Caleb, it depends on string size (stand diameter and count) and what nock you are using. I shoot 14 strands of D97 and have found that Halo .024 works perfect with my Gold Tip nocks. Out of all the different servings I have tried, I like the Halo the best.

You have to experiment with different sizes till you find the right combination for you.

Halo serving is very strong and multiple sizes and colors.

Sounds like halo is the way to go thanks guys....I had a string msde for me one time and it had crown serving that stuff flattened out real bad after only a few shots knocks would get loose and knocking point would move...with the halo serving what kind of knocking points r u using I like tie on knocks just curious what material yall r using for that on the halo

I use BCY Nock Point Tying Thread and tie on my nocks using a nail knot.

I wanted to add, while experimenting only serve an inch then try out your nock for fit. Also, keep NOTES!!! Good luck and have fun.

I like both Brownell's Crown serving, and BCY's Halo.

Crown is flat to start with, and I honestly prefer it a tiny bit over the Halo.
If you are wearing it out, your nocks are to tight.

Brownell's Diamondback is a great serving. I think it is more durable than the
above two mentioned, but it isn't as slick off the fingers.

                        EDIT:
                        P.S
.030 Diamondback makes great nocking points.

We have found that .021 halo serving works best for us on most materials with 'standard' strand counts

I too like the halo serving! It is tuff stuff. I use different diameters based on the bow I am making it for. Heavier bows, more strands, thinner diameter of halo. Light bows, fewer strands, thicker halo. Sounds backwards but it helps keep all the strings about the same diameter (ish). But then again, I shoot carbon arrows.
