I noticed the same trend at the Basspro out here in Katy. A lot of crossbows and a few compounds. But I've seen that the recurves have been going just as fast. There are usually one or two on the shelf but that's because they are moving fast. I'm there usually two to three times a week using the range and as soon as they get a shipment they are gone.

Is archery a lost art?

It's not just in archery. Our whole society has become a "right now" way of life. Weather it is fast food, watching a movie, or anything else. Touch of a button, and it's there. We want our problems solved instantly and entertainments with no effort.
While the "progress" has allowed many more people in the woods, it does take a lot less effort and practice. They get some of the experience, but without the reward of the hard work and effort. Not near the sense of accomplishment and challenge as shooting our type of equipment.
Still, there willl always be a certain segment of the population (read us) that appreciates the method and journey of traditional.

We are all hunters, whether we use traditional, compound, crossbow, rifle, slingshot, or whatever legal weapon.
I bought a bow years ago so that I could hunt the archery season, mainly to be able to shoot does. Lavaca county doesn't allow does to be taken during general season without paying for LAMPS tags. Plus, shooting does with a gun isn't very exciting.
When crossbows were legalized for archery season, I bought a crossbow, mainly for my son to use. I have used it myself, but it's just not the same as the compound.
When general season opens, the rifle comes out.
I don't feel that I am "less of a hunter" than some of those who have commented on this thread because I do not make my own bow and/or arrows or because I hunt with a rifle.
Do what you want and don't worry about how someone else chooses to legally hunt. We have enough enemies to hunting to deal with already. We don't need to fight amongst ourselves.

Myself and most of the folks that have posted are not looking down on folks for using X-bows. Only sad that many will never know the feeling of accomplishment they would get from learning to shoot a bow, spending countless hours practicing then at long last taking a deer with it.
As far as what someone what's to kill their deer with, heck I shoot about half mine every year with a hawkin muzzle loader. To me it is very much like hunting with a x bow. It is good out to about 50 yards, you have one shot, it is really loud when you fire it and it takes a long time to reload.
I think the point that we are discussing is a lot of young folks will never know how much fun it is to try as hard as you can and yet still stink on ice with their bow.
