Why is the string hitting my lip?

Shooting a right handed 60" recurve split finger.

I have shot this bow for 8 years and have suddenly started hitting the right side of my bottom lip with the string. I've been doing it for about 4 months now and it has gotten rather annoying. I have made no conscious change to my form besides that I started shooting with less cant. However, even if I go back to shooting with more cant, the problem persist. I'm not sure when it started but I'm ready for it to stop.

Any idea what is causing it?

Are you consciously trying to use back tension or use expansion in your shot

When that happens to me it's because of one of two things:
        1) Without realizing it I have started turning my head slightly more to the right. Might try squaring your head to the target just a bit.
        2) The other is "turkey necking" - instead of keeping my head upright I'm jutting my head forward

Yes. The problem developed when I started shooting heavily to prep for my elk hunt. I was putting a lot of attention on back tension.

I'm thinking it has to be something to do with how my hand sits on my face or how I'm holding my head.

I can see it being #1. #2 seems unlikely for me since I think I pull my head back a little....which I suppose could also cause it.

Can you elaborate? Are you saying that I'm shooting with my mouth open some? That's a possibility.

You have not recently changed tabs or changed to a tab, have you? If a tab is not small enough it will sometimes smack the heck out of your lip on release.

Bisch, I shoot with an Alaskan super glove. It is smooth worn out and in need of replacement. I'm holding out til I'm working in anchorage next month so I can buy one at their store. I can't imagine how a worn out glove would cause it but ill know for sure when I get a new one!

From what you said, to me it sounds like it could be one of two things, or both in combination. It sounds like you might be over drawing your bow which will cause you to turn your face into the string. Over drawing will also cause you to crane your neck back. Both of those things, over drawing and craning your neck back can cause you to turn your face into the string, which will cause you to hit your lip. The best thing to do is to set up a camera and video yourself so you can see exactly what you are doing so you can fix it.

                        Good luck.

Never heard of a glove causing that. I have heard of and seen examples of tabs doing it. I was just throwing it out there as something to look at.

I have that problem occasionally because I anchor with my index finger in the corner of my mouth and I catch myself pooching my lip out to set my finger. When it first started I had someone watch me shoot to see what they saw might be happening. Cause you do things without realizing it.

Sounds like your draw has extended and your turning your head into the string, I had this happen when I started practicing back tension, I ended up moving the index finger portion of my anchor back to hook the front of my jaw bone this realigned my head to the target and stopped the lip slap
