    How Tall

My wife and I will be heading to South Texas, near Benavides, for our annual pig/javvie hunt in January. We will hunt pigs at night with a bow mounted light. What height tripod would you recommend? I have a couple of folding tripod stands that are about 12' to eye level.

Many times I use an 10' tripod for deer and hogs..

When I went at night I used a five gallon bucket on the ground. Spread that corn right up to my feet. You can get a close shot that way.

10 to 12' should be plenty sufficient but also depends on how much cover there is. In some areas of south texas, a 10' tripod will stick out like a sore thumb. I've also heard that pigs tend to spook when they see their shadow from a hog light but I could be wrong on this as I've only shot one pig with a hog light and I was on the ground.

It all depends on the brush. Anything from ground level up to 16ft could be used.

I have a 4.5 foot tripod that I made just for hunting deep south Texas white brush. Night time any comfortable, quiet chair will work fine or 5 gallon bucket.

A lot of times I use a chair on the ground. If I use a tripod, it is rarely over 6'.

What you have will work. Like the guys above, I prefer a shorter one, and a very close shot. It's dark, so you don't need to be high...as being seen by the pigs is not an issue.

Thanks for the input. I was concerned about them being too high. 12' is the shortest I've got, since anything shorter is not really useable on our property down in NC (we don't have pigs - yet).

I would say your one of the lucky ones. Pigs are a pain in the tale

They've shown up less than 50 miles away so they'll probably eventually show up. I would just as soon that they didn't, I can travel when I want to shoot pigs.

                        Hey Philip,

You have probaby done this, but just incase.....make sure you practice at night with your set up. Things tend to look farther in the dark or low light. It will mess with your instinctive shooting, causing most to shoot high.

I try and set up at 10 or less for night hunting, and then am very careful about my shot selection. Best of luck.

I do practice at night. This is my setup:
