Question for Bisch and others shooting 50# trad bows

What is the biggest hog you have killed with your set up? How often do you get pass-throughs on hogs? In my compound days, I usually tried to shoot the biggest one in the bunch but to increase chances of recovery I'm not sure that is wise with my 50# longbow. I am shooting 545 grain arrows with 20% FOC. I'm using a 3 blade (Woodsman Elite) for deer, but when hunting exclusively for pigs I will go with a 2 blade.

I'm interested to see everyone's thoughts on this.

I have shot some pretty decent ones.. Def go with a two blade tho.. I actually had to up my arrow weight last year bc of bad penetration.. After that no problems.. I barely ever get a pass through tho.

Bisch has killed more critters than Parvo.
50 will kill any pig out there if you hit him right.
That is from someone that does 90% of his hunting with a 74# bow.
As far as pass thrus go, even with my heavy bows I rarely shoot thru them to the point of the arrow sticking in the ground

I don't normally shoot the big hogs. They just don't eat as good as the smaller ones. The biggest one i have shot was pushing 200# and i have shot several in the 150#-175# range.

I nearly never get a complete passthrough on the bigger pigs and probably get a passthrough on maybe 50% of the smaller ones. Complete passthrough is not nearly as important as having a low entry AND and exit hole.

I use a 1 1/2" wide broadhead on the smaller pigs, but always have a 1 1/8" wide BH in my quiver incase i decide to shoot at a big one.

My set-up is 50# at my DL and I shoot an arrow that is about 10.3gpp and 22.5%FOC.

John, that set-up of yours will work just fine The key to hogs (esp. big ones) is GREAT shot placement. You have to stay low and tight on the big ones. You hit a big one high and you more than likely just lost a pig. You might kill them but finding a big one off a high hit is not a very high percentage outcome.

I've shot a lot of hogs but I've had 1 pass thru on a hog and he was about 200 lbs. i say pass thru but it buried the feathers and fell out the other side as he ran off. It was with a 2 blade Magnus.

BTW, John, those Eclipse BH's you were looking at in the other thread would work great on the big pigs. Still though, shot placement is everything when shooting the big pigs.

I'm with Bisch on this one, two blade works better for me on pigs. I have gotten complete pass through on a couple with Woodman's Elite, but I was shooting 275 grains on the front end of those arrows and there wasn't much going to stop them.

The last 2 nice hogs I have killed was with a 52@30" bow and a 600gr arrow with a 2 blade heads. Arrow was up to the feathers on the first one broadside shot , second hog was a quartering away shot at 18yds broadhead came out just behind the off shoulder.Stay off the shoulder and stay low and your set-up will do fine.....

Take the quartering away shot and you will be fine.

I killed a 450+ with 43# curve and sniffer, shot was 8 yards... I'll dig up a pic when I get home... Squared his 2" thick shield and got past it by 7 inches. He went 30 yards

That being said if I had know he was that big I would have second guessed my equipment, I shot him at night

You also got REAL lucky he only went 30yds! On most BIG boars, if you hit them in the shield, you are not gonna have a blood trail and (wether he lives or dies) he is gonna go far enough for you to lose him.

                            JMHO,
