    longbow string length

Im still pretty new to trad shooting. I have a question about string length. Recently the string on my longbow broke and I decided to try to shooting it with a string I had on hand that was an inch shorter than whats considered correct for it. After shooting it a little I decided I kind of like the way it shoots with the shorter string. I am considering buying a new string for it in the shorter length. Is that a bad idea or could it work?

You need to be shooting a string that is around 3" shorter than the stated AMO length on the bow. This measurement is usually printed along with the draw weight and length, for example: 62" 45# @ 28"

Most bows have around a 1" range of adjustability when it comes to brace height, if you use a string that's too short for an extended period of time you run the risk of putting too much preload on the limbs which could cause pre-mature limb failure.

What kind of brace height does the string give you? If it falls on the high side I'd be wary of continuing to use it. You could probably take a few twists out just to be safe. As long as the string has around 1 twist per two inches of string length you should be safe to shoot it without worrying about it pulling apart on you.

Yep what he said. The bowyer/manufactor can also help since they have most likely tested their bow at different brace heights.
