Lookin for a starter bow for a kid

    Hey everyone,

Keep your eyes and ears open for a low poundage, 35-45, traditional bow for a young man that wants to start hunting. He is about 13 or 14 and pretty strong. I know he wants a bow he can hunt with, but may need a little lower weight to learn on. He has been interested for at least the last 6 months and I haven't gotten around to huntin one up yet. He sent a message to me again this week asking about progress.

I am really hoping to find something in the 100 dollar range... however let me know if you find a good deal just over that, and I will buy it for him.

I did a quick scan on tradgang and stickbow and didn't see anything that looked like it would work under 250 bucks. Any of you guys that do the e-bay thing, keep me in mind. You know you can trust me, even if two of you found them and bought them on the same day, I would take them and just give the second one to the next kid. I have been getting about 3 kids a year started.

Thanks for the help. Just givin a little back.

    Mark,

I have a right handed 40lb @ 28” Martin Mamba that I will loan you for as long as necessary with the understanding that I get it back one day. I shot my first deer with it, so it holds some sentimental value. It is not currently being used and I have loaned it out several times over the years. Your friend is more than welcome to use it as his own, just return it when he upgrades. I am not too worried about damaging it. If it explodes I will glue it back together and hang it on the wall; I don’t intend to use it again.

      Chris,

That is a nice offer, but I don't think it will work. I don't know the boy or the family all that well. We were at a picnic and I had a bunch of bows out letting people shoot. This boy was just infatuated with the bows and arrows, he stayed around all day and asked me a ton of questions. I want to help him, because he seemed like a good kid and I don't think his parents want to get involved. Although they seemed really nice and had no problem with archery. The dad is big into shotguns.

After I give him the bow, I may not see him again. I don't want him to have to worry about damage and I sure don't want you to loose something of personal value.

      Thanks again for the offer.

I saw a few last night on ebay. Several name brands if I remember correctly. I think I did an advanced search with "long bow" or "recurve bow" under sporting goods.

Tinman has me thinking about this traditional stuff now.

        Good luck

          Thanks greeflag,

I don't do the e-bay thing. I never have and don't have an account or paypal. I have a couple of friends who are obsessed with it and if I need something I normally put one of those dogs on the trail. Problem is...they are not bowhunters, so have no clue what to look for.

I guess I need to get into this century and figure it out. In the mean time if any of you pick something up at a garage sale, pawn shop, or e-bay, let's under 150 bucks, I will repay you and take it off your hands. Looking for a Martin, Bear, Wing, etc, you know...name brand. I don't really trust a homemade job to give to a kid.

                    Mark,

58# is too heavy, I will look into the longbow. Thanks to the rest, I sent you a pm stick. We can talk off the board.

                        Mark,

I am sending Stick a check for his bow tomorrow, but I am still interested in what you found. I will be working tomorrow night, but you can leave me a message or an e-mail. Thanks
