So as the season is getting close and I have killed only one deer with my recurve ( and it wasn't the prettiest of scenarios) I am curious where you experienced trad hunters aim on calm/ non-alert Texas whitetail inside of 20 yrds.

And if my patience is good I wait until they are calm with head down and eating. Seems like every year though that there is always one old trouble maker nanny doe that likes to snort and blow and keep em all on edge.
The one last year finally made a fatal mistake at 8 yds. I shot about 6" low and she ducked right into it.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Although I don't and haven't shot over 20. But just in case a big one comes in
I know my gaps
I'm not holding my arrow low to hit but that's where I'm sending the arrow, to hit when they drop

As someone who will soon be taking his first shot at a whitetail with a trad bow, this thread is not doing much for my confidence. With all the deer I killed with my compound, I just picked a spot low on the vitals and let it fly. I guess I'm not sure how to "pick a spot" in the air below its chest.(?) Should I be practicing by shooting 6" under a 3d deer?

I am at the bottom of the heart if they duck you still get lungs. Every where you hunt is different. The deer at my place are not to jumpy so this works for me. In Kansas you aim where you want to hit a buck and maybe a touch low for a doe. Pay attention to your deer and make the adjustment needed for your situation.

I don't aim off the deer. I do aim very low, like between the elbow and body line. Sometimes at the body line.
One of the biggest things here, in my opinion, is the metal state of the deer. If they are wired and on alert, I just don't shoot. I wait until they are relaxed, maybe swishing a tail back and forth, or taking a bite of corn.
And like I always say "I would rather miss low, than hit high!!!" A clean miss under the deer, is no issue. I high hit is a long trail and many times no recovery.
