    Some questions about TBOT shoots

Looks like me and my son Josh will be taking a break from hunting with Buff at Big Oak and going over to Tyler to the TBOT shoot (thanks for the heads up Bisch and Marty). I'm not close to being ready to shoot but I ain't skeered.

A few questions. What is a California start? (I hope that doesn't mean I have to have a pink quiver).

Can I get by with only 5 arrows?

I guess shooting a recurve with carbon arrows would put me in the Men's Recurve Open class?

Do you get put into a group by the shoot's organizer or do you have to have a group already?

What distances can i expect to shoot from?

How do I know which color stakes are mine?

How much time do I have to find my arrows between targets?

Thanks for the answers and anything else you can think of.

A few questions. What is a California start? (I hope that doesn't mean I have to have a pink quiver). It means you can show up and start at any time after it opens as long as you give yourself at least a couple hours to run the course before it closes.

Can I get by with only 5 arrows? Depends on how good a shot your are. My first shoot, I managed to lose, break or stress crack all 12 of my brand new, beautiful wood arrows made by Rubydog (Terry). But I had just started shooting a few months before, knew nothing about back tension, blank bale practice, consistent anchor, etc. That was a little over 2 years ago. Now, I may lose, break or bend one or two during a shoot.

I guess shooting a recurve with carbon arrows would put me in the Men's Recurve Open class? I believe you're right.

Do you get put into a group by the shoot's organizer or do you have to have a group already? You can shoot with whomever you wish. I usually show up and ask whomever's around if I can shoot with them. No one's brushed me away yet, and I've managed to meet some really fine folks that way.

What distances can i expect to shoot from? Most shoots I've been to average about 18-23 yards, with the shortest being around 8 or 10, and maybe one or two long shots of about 40 to even 60 yds.

How do I know which color stakes are mine? At my first shoot, I shot for fun, so I could shoot from whichever distance I felt comfortable. When I've shot for score, I've had to shoot from the stake farthest from the target.

How much time do I have to find my arrows between targets? I guess it depends on how patient the group is with whom you're shooting or if you're holding up other groups waiting to shoot that target. I usually give up after a few minutes (maybe no more than 5?) and chalk it up to sacrificing one to the arrows gods.

Thanks for the answers and anything else you can think of. Whether I do well or not, I've always managed to have fun at each shoot and have met some great folks.

It just means you will have a couple of fruits and two nuts in your group.

Chew, here are the TBoT guidelines:

In re: your shooting group, just remember there must be at least 3 participating shooters including yourself in a group and one of those must keep score.
I call the "min 3 in a group" deal out because newbies routinely don't know about this one (I met a new shooter at the CCBA TBoT last weekend, as we were leaving who was rushing to get another round in, saying she'd just get someone to walk around with her and keep score and I had to gently correct the notion. She was fine with that, she just didn't know)

It is a good idea to ask about stake color. TBoT shoots keep the same colors going as a general rule but its best to ask just in case. I have shot whole rounds from the wrong stake before.

Bobby, I'm not sure yet, but I am going to try to come up to Marty's and go to the shoot with y'all. If you go with Marty and me you won't have a thing to worry about. We will get you going. Like stated above, if the stakes are too far for you to hit most of them, just move up a bit to where you are comfortable and don't turn your scorecard in. You will be in Recurve Open with that equipment. These shoots are a blast. I took a guy with me a couple weeks ago to a shoot who just started shooting trad about a month ago and he was all worried about losing all his arrows. He ended up making it through the shoot and only missed one target and did not lose any arrows. He was really pumped and said he had had more fun at that shoot than any other shoot he had ever been to with a compound.

I hope I can work it out to come up,

            Bisch

Different clubs have their own color stakes, more often than not, so it's always best to ask at registration.
And, I have to clarify my friend equin on one thing - occasionally women's stakes are further than men's, just to mix it up some.
But, if you shoot with Bisch or Marty (or any "veteran" of TBoT shoots), you'll be just fine

If you've ever shot a 3D tournament with compound bows, it's nothing like that. Much more laid back, very rarely do you end up having to wait on folks in front of you, and everyone is just there to have fun and fling some arrows. If you see a pile of rocks stacked up next to a stake, those were put there for Bisch to kick. He can be fairly dangerous when he starts kicking rocks, so stand clear.

I will probably need to wear steel-toed boots so I don't hurt myself!

I always carry one Flu-Flu arrow with a Judo point that we can use if you run out of arrows

Thanks! Make sure the fetching is reflective so we can go out after the shoot and find it with flashlights!

Charles, glad to hear you're gonna be there. Looking forward to finally meeting you!

Chew, I never have plans to shoot with any special group and I always end up shooting with a great group of folks.
If you need someone to shoot with, I'd be proud to shoot with you.
Your gonna have a lot of fun
