    Broadhead penetration test

After coming back from the hunt at Squiggy's place, I wanted to test a few broadheads on a dead hog, since I didn't get to draw on a real one.

    The broadheads tested was:

    1. 125 grain Magnus Stinger

    2. 145 grain Steel Force Traditional

    3. 210 grain trade point I made

The bow is a Ben Pearson recurve 45@28. My draw is closer to 29. Shots where from 15 yards.

The Magnus got about 3 inches of penetration right below the spine. I didn't take any pics cuz my cam was all fogged up. That's why the pics are blurry.

The Steel Force got about 10 inches of penetration. Vital hit right behind the shoulder.

The 210 gr trade point pass thru with about 5 inches of arrow hanging out the other side.

    Verdict:

Until I finish my boo-back osage bow at a target draw weight of 70#, I'll be shooting heavy BH out of my 45#. I'll save the lighter weight for close deer shots.

Top arrow is the Steel Force. bottom is the trade point.

    trade point pass thru

Are you going to make your whole setup, like bow arrow and broadhead? Nice pictures too

I'm setting up some high FOC arrows for an elk hunt this fall. Im using GT 75/95 arrows at 29 1/2" with 225 grain inserts and 225 grain Tuffhead broad heads. When I was tuning the setup this weekend, those tuffheads would get complete penetration thru my foam target with a foot of arrow sticking out the back from my Sarrels bobcatt @ 55#. I am impressed!

Cool test, but not quite apples to apples. Do you know your arrow weights and FOCs?

A good test Leon and I am not suprised by the results. I have always found that a heavy FOC will drive home the point.

Besides changing the bh, ceteris paribus. I weighed the arrows once but forgot how much the weigh. They're 2016 Easton legacy cut to 29.5 inches.

Cool. Assuming they all were flying straight, it certainly makes sense that the heavier would penetrate better. I have a hard time digesting that the Magnus only went in 10"...those things come sharp! Thanks for sharing.

Wasn't the best of shot placements, I'd must admit...

How do you compare your traditional bow broadheads from your traditional bows? I have never tried the mentioned test myself. If there's a better way please share, we're all here to learn something (well most of us).

                            Thanks,
                            Ben
