Going through my stockpile, found some tapered Ash, Hemlock, Red Balau mixed in with all the tapered Cedar. I've got enough raw shafts to keep pretty busy until next spring. Have a test kit of tapered DF on the Christmas list.
Eureka!!! Just pulled a couple bundles of DF raw shafts out of a tube. Seven shafts in two consecutive spine groups (70-77#) that I can start fiddling with. Giddy Up!!!
Just weighed the Hemlock and they're @450 grains raw, the DF range from 460-485 grains. The tapered Ash is 529 grains raw. These all look 11/32". So I'll stain up the group, seal coat and fletch them. Then the fun begins!
Lighter isn't the point. In fact it's opposite the point.
You're missing the point. Lighter is better. You can add all the weight you want, just do it in the front. As I said, the perfect arrow would be a point with a string on it. The lighter the shaft, the better it follows the point. It makes it so much easier to tune. Try a couple some time. I really think you would like it.

I didn't realize hemlock was so light. So. About the same as cedar?
